Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Ericsson is not taking Over RAN, stop lying

I am a national RAN employee, not going to say at what level. These rumors of AT&T outsourcing RAN roles to Ericsson or anyone else are pure lies. You are being gaslighted people. AT&T is moving to open RAN to provide opportunities for flexibility in building and managing its 5G network and part of that is training and using its own employees to manage the network. Any posts saying otherwise is total bs.

When the company says it's safe and there are no "planned" layoffs, it is all a game. Many functions, whether "centralized" HQ or market, will eventually be let go or moved to Ericsson. Common sense and our "leaders" words should paint the picture on the wall.

Duplicate functions in HQ and market, no defined plan, and repetition of "no planned" layoffs should scream, you are going to lose your job. News is out that some are losing their job (off-payroll in February) because they will not move. (RTO firings). Roles for HQ optimization will backfill.

Many mocked my post, saying we are not moving to Ericsson, no single OEM supplier, impacts to RAN and other groups in mobility like MCAC/NFSD. Even saying changes to C&E mobility and what happened, Equipment Engineering goes to HQ. Go figure.....

Take it from someone who has some details. Jobs will be lost and "transitioned" in 2024 and into 2025 as the Ericsson market migrates needed equipment to O-RAN capable and Nokia markets transition to Ericsson equipment.

The first half of 2024 has minimal impacts; once the ball starts moving, staffing will be addressed.

Good luck! Hopefully, you don't laugh it off. Look around, see what is happening, and understand why no one can give you a specific answer and is vague on many things.

T will swap out radios, baseband units at every Nokia site over the course of 36 months (optimistic timeline). This won't actually begin for another 8-12 months given the logistics, site acq and design required. RAN design will transition to Ericsson in 2024 (T layoffs) At the conclusion of the project (36 months from construction start), E will take over RAN performance and optimization services for AT&T. AT&T RAN design engineers have about 6-12 months left and perf/opt engineers have 36-48 months before being let go or transitioned to Ericsson. You are delusional if you think this will not result in major headcount reductions. This is AT&T being At&T 😏

Total cash play for mobility. Needing to shift more capital allocation to support growing fiber build. Big gamble, fingers crossed this all works.

Not a fact to the poster who claims otherwise. AT&T is planning to spend money training all non Ericsson familiar RAN Engineers on the Ericsson platform. Fact..AT&T intends to leverage cost savings and potential revenue streams from Open RAN and use its market based engineers in both a market and centralized role. Stop spreading BS about T handing the keys to Ericsson, it isn’t happening

“Open RAN starts with a vendor that actually supports Open RAN. Ericsson is the vendor which is currently most advanced in the process and implementation of ORAN. Once T installs the Ericsson BBU we are on the way. Moving everything to E now is a byproduct”

What are you talking about? Why Ericsson is swapping Nokia radios if it is open RAN? They can simply integrate Nokia radio to Ericsson BBUs or COTS if they wanted to.

In 5 years 100% Radio, baseband units and software will be Ericsson. They can have couple of Fujitsu radios in some markets but that is all.

“ How is this Open RAN if BBU, Radios and Software is provided by Ericsson.
This is simply an operation Ericsson taking over step by step.

Looks like this is Open RAN which is open to Ericsson only.”
