Thread regarding 3M layoffs

Some observations

This page tends to have about 20 regular posters.

At least half are former 3Mers, the rest are primarily upset current 3Mers. Meaning of the regular posters on here only 10 current 3Mers (from 80,000ish).

On average a post has around 2000 views. Assuming a person views a post twice that’s around 1000 discrete individuals. My guess is that the views are 70/30 (current vs former) employees.

More frequently, we are seeing a post being positive-ish, which quickly gets shot down by the regular posters as either non representative of the masses or “from HR”.

Agreed, moral is down & that agree that senior excecs don’t appear to inspiring a solution, but at the same time, I feel that we also have to observe that these threads are extreme end of negative 3M sentiment & these 20 regular posters don’t reflect the exact feelings of the silent majority.

I’m all for ppl having their say, I understand that venting can be cathartic, but I’m struggling with the pack mentality that is coming through against those who don’t 100% want to join in on the M&M pile on.

Some of us are rooting for the company, despite the current situation. After all the company is more that M&M.

It's definitely more than 20. Just look at the diverse topics discussed here and it is quite obvious.

Wonder how you have made an "observation" that there are 20 posters when they are anonymous. Love to see your algorithm. Also, morale is spelled this way. Thanks for participating though.

Not everyone hopes 3M does well- letting people go because you have no plan on true growth comes down to greed and stupidity. But at least those consultants will have a nice Christmas

when a company stops giving the small incentives to worker bees but wants to spend billions on DEI, then there is something not right, when they take the needed people out of plants and give them hybrid careers , then there is something wrong, it was time to cut the fat at the top and it was looking like maybe it was turnaround time, but no, more and more sideways and upward promotions and new names with the wrong experience, this shows we are setting up for a big fall, what is it, we know Solventum are taking as many people with them from Home Team, there are tens of tens more reasons I could give but I guess you could think up several yourself. Good luck to the new company and hope it succeeds , BH looks to be building great foundations so far

As for the statistics mentioned, I don't think the OP has taken into consideration that most of the page views are unaccounted for because most of the people visiting just scroll through the forum usually not engaging within the threads at all. I assume some check this page on a daily basis, others once or twice a week. One can notice that because whenever something important is happening - the engagement quickly goes up, skyrocketing the view and reply numbers on certain threads.

Posting messages leveraging segmentation of people is a old well known receip to divise each other and lower the reality they express. Well tried but 3m people are a bit more clever than the food management is trying to get us eat. This place is a community place and we are all together here to share and try to better understand our company and how to decide the best way to go further.

I've seen this as well.

People who post here are extremely upset. They lost jobs, it they feel very disgruntled, which is why they frequent this site.

They're not representative of the average person. They're the squeaky wheel, sure, but they're the outlier.

But you're right--suggesting that they don't represent the average 3Mer is blasphemous here, because why would anyone be on this site except to complain and feel validated?

The reality is that the majority of 3Mers are feeling under the g-n, but generally optimistic. We're turning the corner, and while we've watched a bunch of good people get the axe, we don't necessarily think that the problems are ongoing.

As far as stock prices go, it's pretty clear by that Inge propped them up artificially through stick buy-backs and other games, and they needed to come down. Then Mike Roman bumbled his way through the pandemic. So of course, the stock price su-ks, but it's only half MR's fault.

@OP+1pRyBFBs

I agree there are maybe 20 who regularly post under pseudonyms like I do, but the anonymous numbers I think you are underestimating, possibly by as much full order of magnitude.

In terms of readership, between bots and other flaws, I wouldn't trust the 'views' count for anything.

On positivity:

I think you will find that most people wish 3M was doing well, I know I do. In all my doom-casting, I sincerely hope I am wrong.

Unfortunately the available objective data do not even come close to supporting a positive forecast. 3M is failing substantially by almost every metric. Roman and his leadership team have clearly failed to take effective actions, even by their own metrics.

Because of their failure, instead of being a $40B+ company, we have a company that will barely be $30B this year. (If 3M grew at 5% CAGR since Roman started, 3M would be around $41B in sales this year, not counting acquisitions.)

Because of their failure, instead of making more of the world's lives better, 3M is withdrawing from significant parts of the world.

Because of their failure, instead of there being nearly 100,000 or 110,000 3Mers, there closer to 80,000. That number will soon be around 65,000 with the spin.

There is a difference between wishing things were better and being baselessly over-optimistic.

I have to ask...how did you come up with these numbers and if you are such a proud 3M employee why are you wasting your time posting on this site? This is a "Layoff site". I wouldn't expect the posts to be sunshine and roses.

You are so wrong. Everyone hopes
3M does well. We all have so much invested in 3M. I love 3M. My dad worked for 3M. But the truth is the truth. The stock has plummeted since 2019, there have been mass layoffs and significant legal challenges, at least one I was told was self-inflicted. Managers are overwhelmed and stressed. There is no kindness anymore. We cannot ignore the current challenges 3M is facing and the toxicity that is a result of these challenges.

Very well said, but it's hard not to consider M&M&P&basically anyone who has come into the leadership conference as anything but inept. With the Q3 announcement of continued reductions, the nod to reduction in management has been farce. For this once loyal and multi-generational employee, I simply no longer recognize the company. Slow to no growth is masked in the buffoonery of language used at the executive level. Quite obvious they are responsible and aware, but unwilling to actually do anything to about it.
Must be nice to retreat to Naples on the backs of thousands.
Good riddance and goodbye.
