Employment Lawyer - Severance

Please, consult one before signing your documents or agreeing to the severance. He-l, call one even if you've signed and agreed to their pennies. They offer free, no obligation consultations. Let them confirm if what you've been offered is fair and not TransUnion HR. You've been lowballed, for sure.

Trust me, I would know and can't post why without identifying myself.

The only thing I can chime in with, even if it is a stretch, would be to go after them for Geographical discrimination. While this has recently begun to be tossed around with companies forcing employees to RTO even if they moved farther from the office during the pandemic, I view it as because we are US citizens, living in the US, the cost of living is higher, thus resulting in needing a higher livable wage, because of this we are being let go. Our jobs are sent to other countries where labor is cheaper because the cost of living is cheaper. Tokyo is one of the most expensive cities on the planet, and you don’t see our jobs going there. Instead, it’s South Africa and Costa Rica, to name a few. It’s bullsh-t, and they know it can be pinned as Geographical Discrimination.

We have this thing in America called at-will employment. Yeah it su-ks. With certain covered exceptions employers can fire you and pay you what they deem fit and you agree to. Severance is not a legally required thing. It’s the right thing to do for sure but unless you can prove that you were wrongly terminated, I don’t see what leg you can stand on. You all gotta do what you gotta do but if you think you’re gonna negotiate some kind of golden parachute you’re fooling yourself.

To blindly accept what they are giving you and to dismiss it as 'the law is on their side' or 'some [companies] offer nothing at all' is the silliest thing you could do.

Be smart.

Honestly apart from what people may think about the dollar amounts they are getting I think the terms are pretty fair. The main thing is you can’t publicly make false or disparaging claims about TU. Fine. I can live with that.

But we don’t have to pay back any part of the severance if we get hired somewhere else.

And so if you can find a new job quickly you could possibly double dip and come out ahead

Everyone needs to obviously do heads right for them but I can tell you that while what TU is offering may not be the absolute best, there are companies that offer far worse. Some offer nothing at all.

Again, if you think hiring a lawyer to get a few extra weeks that might be negated by their fee go ahead.

And I realize that people in management probably are better off than regular workers here. So I’m not trying to minimize what regular associates might be dealing with.
