Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

post layoff communication?

I was notified 2 weeks ago (by my manager's manager) that I was impacted by the most recent layoffs in the GBUs. Since then, I haven't heard a single thing from my manager or any of my team members. It's like I suddenly stopped existing. My manager and I had a 1-on-1 scheduled for the following week and he just cancelled it on the Calendar with no explanation. Is this how layoffs usually work? I wouldn't know because it's my first full-time job out of college. I guess my team and I just go our separate ways with no goodbyes/communication at all?

Oracle needs real leaders. Training, continuing mgmt ed is important. They don’t invest which is reason mgmt su-ks. Those lie, cheat & steal are promoted so they can have something on them. It’s evolved into a nightmare. LE needs to do his 1990 replacement soon.

I see many managers in Oracle behave badly with their employees. Why are people stuck? Have some dignity and courage to quit

Sad, but this is the reality at Oracle and some (but not all) other companies. Once you're notified that you're getting RIFd, you are "persona non grata". You're often removed from your team's email lists, not invited to any meetings, nada. Shameful conduct by companies.

You WILL find a much better place to work, somewhere where you're respected and appreciated. Oracle is not that place. After being given the RIF boot by Oracle, I found a much better position at a far better company.

The only post layoff communications that will occur will be on this board. Make use of it to express your feelings.

I'm sorry this is your first job. Just know that not all companies are like Oracle. There are better places to work for in your future.

Just a quick 5 min zoom and a very long career is over. Even after serving my entire career, running a very large team, building software, minting $100+ Million in YOY revenue and I still could not afford a house. Stuck with legacy technology knowledge no one wants in other companies with age that's discriminated in tech companies.

I am feeling like biggest fool now and learned loyalty never pays.

Hard Lessons-

  • Self serve first. Corporate companies are not your friend. They are there to make money even if US citizens suffer. Cheap outsourced labor will one day take your job anyway.
  • Keep your self relevant by learning market relevant technologies. In today's time, stick to open source technologies. Do not work on proprietary technologies. In case you are stuck, have an exit plan.
  • Do not be lured by false future promises. Stick to what can be compensated in present. No one knows future, not even your boss or his boss.
  • You will be taken advantage of if you allow that t happen. Fight for your rights diplomatically if personal situation allows else have an exit plan ready.
  • Do not stay for more than 2 years in a place unless you see string future growth
  • Maintain a work life balance. I regret this as time lost will never come back.
  • Try getting side income, you never know when your side hustle will turn out to be life saver.
  • Save as much as you can and invest wisely.

Yea, you mostly stop existing when you get laid off. Enjoy the two weeks paid with benefits! I skied all ten days of it. You will receive your package by Fedex.

Perhaps, but managers are almost immortal. They are like something floating on the surface, above it all.

Not this round it seems. I saw 2 directors axed this time, and according to yesterday email from high management they also axed 1 VP and moved another VP to a different division.

Completely disagree - this is exactly how others companies do layoffs. Recently impacted at major fake wireless company. Long term employee....they never knew me after notification.

Checking layoff.com for companies I am considering...just to be a fly on the wall.

Please know how I mean this, not being shady...NEVER FORGET. No matter where your next stop is, always remember - jobs are transactional. Companies faux love you, until they don't. They move on. They spend effort and resources creating a fantasy "culture" so employees don't.

Always do your best, for you first, then whatever company you WORK for. For sure, give them 100% (what they are paying for), but loyalty, keeping skills sharp, etc? Let that be for you and to YOU only. And keep your "be ready" plan (low expenses, savings, etc) always fine tuned.

Yep, it su-ks. Process, be mad for a minute, then move on. Don't get stuck, they won't. You'll be fine. Happier probably. Good luck.

Two weeks ago?

You’re done.

That’s what happens. You are dropped like you have the plague. If you are lucky, and have a friend, they may talk to you, but you are done!

Move on.

What happens at Oracle is not what happens at other companies when layoffs happen. Sadly- what you described is what I’ve witnessed thru the last few rounds of layoffs.
Oracle doesn’t train Managers on how to manage or be leaders. So they deliver the awkward HR scripted line- then they “focus forward”. It’s awful
As far as your team- they may not even know you’ve been RIFd unless you tell them or they go to message you and your slack is deactivated.

AFAIK (maybe dependent on location/contract/notice period) when you're laid off like this you're put on "gardening leave" and are expected to stop all work related activities. You still have limited access to email/slack for a short while so you can say your goodbyes etc, but essentially you're sitting-out the remainder of your contracted notice leave, tidying up HR loose ends and such.

Maybe your manager got RIF'd too?
