When positions are “eliminated” some teammates are allowed to raise their hand to be riffed and some aren’t allowed to and are moved into other roles. Does anyone know why?

Say that while you never worked at BB&T, you really respect the BB&T employees you worked with, and are sad they are all gone. That will put you at the front of the line.
Just tell your manager you have several good ideas and would like to share them. That should do it. And sadly, I am only partly kidding.
In our department the a lot of people laid off had made complaints to HR in the past, try that
Appear productive and you will get laid off. Appear worthless and you will get promoted to management in no time.
Just openly disagree with something that EL has said. That will to the trick!
It really depends on your EL - 1 leader. Some are open to letting people who want to leave be riffed and others just hack and slash with no regard.
You obviously know nothing at all about layoffs.
