Know several underwriters who were laid off in 2022, and NONE of them are doing UW now. They are still unemployed or got totally new careers starting over. Sad to see.
McDonald's and KFC are hiring.
I was a laid off mortgage underwriter. Skills transfer well into compliance and similar risk-mitigation roles and I had some luck there. But stay away from WF risk management roles - they can (and have) had layoffs as jobs get offshored.
Underwriting for an insurance company. Baby boomers are hitting that age

Honestly probably depends on your specific location and industry around
I do believe you underwriters have a number of transferrable skills - you made a whole bunch of poor deals work out in the end for a customer
perhaps it's someone laid off today asking people who were laid off months ago
Going out on a limb here but I doubt the people laid off today have already found new jobs.
