Thread regarding Follett layoffs

The competition

"Barnes & Noble college bookstores have done a few things over the years to get students to come in and buy, teaming up with Starbucks and selling overpriced merchandise. And they have been cost cutting. Wages at Barnes and Noble stores are low and schools rely on college students for much of the work. But coffee and snacks, high prices, low wages and reduced staffing haven't been enough to make the stores profitable."

I looked into working at a B&N store ages ago (2015?) and what they were offering was essentially minimum wage full time. Unsurprised to learn wages haven’t changed since.

Investors funded the acquisition of Follett.
ROI is their expectation.
James family has delivered for their investors.
JRC can do whatever they feel they need to do so as not to fail their investors.

"Don't be rude. JRC is doing great for their investors"

Operative word here is INVESTORS. Wasn't aware that the INVESTORS worked at follett stores. Wasn't aware that INVESTORS got paid what follett store employees get paid. Wasn't aware that INVESTORS gave two hoots about the store employees, because -NEWSFLASH- the effing don't. They only care about the $ they got on their investment.

Barnes & Noble has always been successful at sourcing “over educated/under motivated” employees that aren’t driven by their paychecks, but love the atmosphere of the college store and love providing service to likeminded students.
Barnes & Noble also does a better job of creating an ambiance, in their stores, that is more welcoming for students and alumni.
However, they too are suffering from disruptions that the industry is experiencing that is eroding market share.
