Thread regarding PNC layoffs

Managers barred from giving references to laid off employees

Met with my manager today after getting laid off yesterday. She shared that PNC has a policy where she is not allowed to provide a reference for employees who have been laid off

Most companies have that policy. Otherwise, it exposes them to ticky tacky litigation if you say one person gets a reference and the others don’t. Best thing to do, find a prior leader or colleague no longer with the bank to share feedback on your performance. Former employees are not bound by the policy.

It is policy not to give references. The only way to get around it is to ask someone who has already left PNC for one.

Thats a practice in many corporations to protect both sides . You dont want a “nice” manager ruining your chances due to a bad reference.

Managers have always been advised not to offer recommendations (good or unfavorable) for any former employees. So nothing new. PNC will only verify that an individual was employed there and use a third party provider to verify employment
