Age composition by decisional unit for surplus employees

If you are over 40 years old and your role was surplussed did you have anyone under 40 years old surplussed in your decisional unit?

All of us in my unit are early 40s and older that are impacted. In spite of popular belief, this move is decimating HR as well. Lots of the very experienced people who are willing to support and fight for employees are being eliminated.
It is extremely unpopular across the board with everyone except John Stankey.

I'd argue that the move to centralized locations is inherently discriminatory against older employees. Older employees don't have the option to just drop everything and move. Everything about this strikes me as a fig leaf to allow AT&T to dump older, higher paid employees in order cut salaries. Again, AT&T has been so flagrant about this, and its CEO has shot off his mouth so much, I think a federal court might choose to set aside the language in the severance contract and allow a discrimination suit to go forward. But you guys are going to have to organize in order to get this done. Don't roll over and take this cr-p. You gave the best years of your lives to this cr-ppy company. You have earned better treatment.

It seems to me that the CEO has made numerous statements to the effect that he's perfectly happy to layoff longtime (older) employees in favor of hiring younger people. On it's face, this appears to be a direct admission of age discrimination. Why don't a bunch of you who believe you have been the victims of age discrimination get together and file a class-action suit? There is a law firm in Pennsylvania that is representing a former AT&T employee and they just got the judge to toss the waiver she signed in order to get severance. I wouldn't go down without a fight when the circumstances are so clear.

Everyone that was laid off in my group was over 55. However, we all expected it and unfortunately, everyone should expect the same thing. The the cost of an older employee is substantially higher than the cost of a younger employee. It’s not just salary. It’s all the benefits associated with older employees, including pension, 401(k), pay raises, number of days off, For those who say they’re just taking riding out the circumstance, have you no honor or integrity? That karma sm--k on your big, white hairy a$$ is going to be satisfying to watch.

If you are/were in the legal department and all the attorney layoffs were over 50 years old and half over 62 years old and you describe this as clear-cut age discrimination, then why aren't any of those laid off not suing the company. With the proper documentation that those attorneys should easily request as part of a suit this should be easily proved.

I am in my 60s and panicked. My anxiety grows everyday. I have a spouse and adult children who live home and depend on me. The details are private but unavoidable. Peaple who dislike AT&T and the bad work conditions who can leave should go so now so people like me who need this job have a shot at keeping it . I would if I could but I had have debt that means me work for decade. The chance of finding a job elsewhere are not good at my age. I know young people think I’m old but I’m a hard worker and dedicated but age discrimination is real. My boss could care less about me. She ignores and doesn’t like me because I’m not her demographic. She is an unremarkable naysayer who toes the company line. Most people here is apathetic and scared and helpless to do anything about it. The people who say mental health is important here do the most to undermined it. layoff talk needs to stop as it just stresses everyone and those who do it should think about what it dies to other people. Civility and honor is dead. Leave or stop the scary talk and contributed to the horrible culture. No need to criticize because I get it. I’m just tired of mean people and not being in the right geography and click and age so left dressed and on edge all the time.

TW definitely skew older, because many are Legacy T and you had to be a somewhat senior level worker in 2006 to be a TW.

But look, they changed the job location, so no worries about age quotas! I wish the company was as clever about acquisitions and product strategy as seem to be with finding ways to reduce staff and televise pepper eating contests among executives.

I'm 69 years old and still working for this company and there's not a d@mn thing they can do about it! Why quit when it's easy money and I'm laughing all the way to the bank. It's not my fault T is only going after management and not craft employees! If T wanted older craft employees off the payroll, they would hand them a VTP, but apparently, T doesn't care very much about craft!

I only know about the Legal Department. And it’s blatant age discrimination. All of the lawyers fired on June 20 by AT&T in its “layoffs” are over 50. More than half of them are over 62.

It’s pretty blatant.

“Is there anyone under 40 in management? We haven’t had a hiring spree in 25 years.”
Actually every promotion I’ve seen the past few years has gone to someone in their early 30s. Anyone that’s older already knows not going to happen.

T isn’t discriminating. 90% of corporate employees are relics.

Not that hard to prove… there’s about 3 different law firms already taking case.
comment helped where leadership stated he believes company need a younger workforce.

Things like this take time in courts. Be patient. Maybe not all/enough but Some justice will be served to leadership that ki-led this company and cost many, many jobs.

"You just don't see as many younger people being laid off because there are not too many younger people, not in management at least."

In fact, you know what, now that I'm thinking about it, they might have surplussed me just to bring that average age of surplussed people in our group down, because too many people want to claim age discrimination and whatnot. That's a nice thought. Thanks guys:)

be a hard lawsuit to win without proving the overall age discrimination, it's as dirty as it gets, but the US is aweful with worker protection laws.

"No, but there's nobody under 40 in the unit"

Yeah. So kind of hard to agree with this whole "Age discrimination" thing, when the majority of people are older. I got surplussed in July. Youngest one on the team, 36 years old. You just don't see as many younger people being laid off because there are not too many younger people, not in management at least.

In my GTO team, currently, the only two that have been surpluses are both at or above the rule of 75. Neither of them wanted to leave, but they had no choice. One of them lives 4 hours from an office and was designated FTO. don't know the other status but got his "it was nice working with you all email last week"

I was the only one let go in my group. By the way, I was the oldest. Got to wonder about that after the stupidity that came out of the CEO’s mouth🥸
