Negotiating severence

Has anyone been able to negotiate their severence when laid off for restructuring reasons (not performance related)? Are certain terms more flexible than others?

It doesn’t look like negotiating severance works. There was no hr present during pip delivery. When attempting to negotiate they diverted saying that he will have more information. Calling he didn’t help. When signing severance It looks like the severance is simply an email sent on the last day of employment that gets signed for via docusign.

Would you mind elaborating on the option of voluntarily departing in return for a severance package? I've been contemplating taking some time off from my role at C1 and would consider making this move if it could help retain someone else's position. I'm fortunate to have strong performance ratings and a supportive manager, so my job is currently secure. However, witnessing the current situation around me without taking action is becoming increasingly difficult.

I am currently waiting for a decision to be made as I am appealing my severance. I just celebrated my 1-year anniversary with a PIP and my MY was full of petty comments, lies and twisting of words from a manager that had ZERO engagement with me. We'll see what happens.

The secret is simply to ask for more months or longer employer paid COBRA period.

I have only seen something like this happen at Director+ level, and it’s usually done in the context of a role elimination discussion - the leader sees that the scope of the role is changing or there may not be a future for them in an upcoming reorg so they work with their manager to do a planned role elimination (which would be severance eligible) instead of being blindsided with a layoff. But even so, usually the person requesting it is a high performer with a boss willing to do this. I wouldn’t even call this severance negotiation since it’s not a negotiation at that point.

I know of a person that volunteered to leave and was able to get a severance package. Just happened a month or so ago. It was unrelated to performance or anything other than they wanted to leave

I begged to be redeployed for a few years since I knew I was over that environment. No way, if you want it, you will never get it. At least I could not even after volunteering. I had decades at the company and saw it all. I talked to many people after the separation and nobody I ever know got anything more than the stated 'package' based on level, time worked, reason for separation. I had a pretty good read on the whole process and I NEVER heard of a single instance where the company made a deal with somebody who wanted to negotiate. I did hear that you were jeopardizing your severance by not accepting it, signing the paperwork and moving on. I made my money and resigned after decades but I still have a bad taste in my mouth. While I am grateful for having a decent paying job for decades, I would not recommend this to anybody. Reading the stuff going on these days is like vuja day. It really got even worse the last few years I was there but I stayed until I was ready or they gave me money to leave, but that never happened. If you are offered money to leave, TAKE IT and move on. That is my advice. Been there, done that.

I can understand not being able to negotiate the severance amount, but what about other terms, like length of
insurance coverage, bonus, LTI vesting terms, 401k vesting (if under 2 years), end date for separation, etc. Does anyone know?

I'm curious, does anyone know what VP level severence package is? All the other levels are on Pulse, but not VP+.

In all my years at the company, through so many waves of redeployments and ratcheting up and down the stack rankings, I have never heard of a single person negotiating a bigger severance. Possibly at VP level, but they are treated differently anyway. I would be interested to hear if anybody is successful.

why would someone leave voluntarily? if you know the severance package ($$) is coming, by leaving voluntarily you'd waive this, no?

I have demanded more severance in my prior job outside Capone. The secret is to simply ask for more cash or longer COBRA insurance and tell them you think the reason why you're being fired is because of their bias and discrimination snd you feel harassed and targeted. Go down in flames and make it spectacular to watch.
