Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Off payroll dates for those in Jeremy Legg org that don't want to RTO - Wave 1

Yesterday, in Jason Press town hall, he said there are 300 impacted with RTO for wave 1 that have to move by 1/1/2024 to Atlanta or Dallas or lose their jobs. He said 150 agreed to move. The rest will be put on surplus early November or December.

He also said there are 1,500 impacted for wave 2 (those are people in cities like Chicago or St. Louis or San Ramon). They will know sometime in 2024 when they must decide to move or be put on surplus. Wave 2 has to RTO by 1/1/2025.

Thank you Stanky for getting rid of all these no good lazy managers. Field techs work late all the time to keep AT&T in the black. The managers delay the work from getting done and go home early every day. Thanks for getting rid of these no good lazy b-m managers. Thank you Stanky, Thank you Stanky, Thank you Stanky, Thank you Stanky, Thank you Stanky, Thank you Stanky, Thank you Stanky, Thank you Stanky, Thank you Stanky, Thank you Stanky…..

An enterprising youngster could make a good living just collecting badges and swiping them twice per day for out-of-state employees.

50% "accepted" because they are hedging their bets to buy themselves a bit of time while they continue their external job search.

Those who think they played the system will be replaced by wave 2 people anyway.

Yes, you have a 6-month commitment.

Sweet! It's a sixth month vacation!

"Relocate" by renting out a place.

Use up all my vacation and sick time.
Go do what tourists do in the Atlanta region.
Come to work and play on my phone doing the bare minimum.
Maybe even do a few no-shows until I'm forced out.

F it. I'm not losing anything.

I understand that many/most Level 2 employees will not receive relocation funding.

Question: If you agree to move- can you do it on company time? Or- are you forced to use vacation days for your self-funded move?

If you get a company relo how long do you have to stay so you don’t have to pay it back? Yes, you have a 6-month commitment.

"I can’t believe any leadership thinks this process will not be abused. "

Oh, they know there will be some trying to game the system. But so what? They certainly don't care, because they can't lose. Think about it:

  1. This entire Hub strategy was designed as a crypto-layoff to reduce headcount.
  2. Anyone not accepting is cut, so T gets what they want.
  3. If someone accepts their new location but leaves for a new job before they report they're no longer on the payroll, so T gets what they want.
  4. If someone accepts their new location and reports, T has an employee they hadn't explicitly released, so T gets what they want.
  5. At some point, that employee who accepted relocation will be laid off anyway, so T gets what they want.

So why would they care if people "abuse" the situation? There is literally no way T loses in this despicable game.

Wow! Happy Holidays and enjoy your layoff. Our leadership is sick in the head and drunk with power.

The subtext is clear:

50% flat out declined because they had enough integrity to not allow themselves to be held hostage by Stink.
50% "accepted" because they are hedging their bets to buy themselves a bit of time while they continue their external job search.

I'd be quite surprised if more than 50% of the 50% that agreed to move actually move.

The follow-through rate for the forced-move RTO is not going to be very high.

The number they claim are moving is an outright lie. There might be a few gaming the system to buy time.

Don’t buy that 50% figure for one minute. No way that’s real.

Those who don’t make the paper bag are surplus to make open chairs.

Atlanta is beyond full, so where are they going to make room for these unless some Atlanta employees will be surplussed to make room?

Legg famously answered, when asked if he was moving to Dallas with his family, with "I'll be there when I'm needed...", meaning, no. He is not going to inconvenience his family and children like this, but you must, plebs.

So glad I'm out of that cr-p hole.

I’m surprised it was a 50% take rate. I’m going to guess these were L3 and up people in wave 1 and probably 50 of that 150 just said yes to buy time. I can tell you no sane L2 would take that with no relo, pay raise or promotion to go with it. It doesn’t make financial sense in this market. Everyone in wave 2 is just hoping they cancel the whole thing.

If this was my first job, I lived in an apartment, did not have any partner or children, I might have considered moving.

I would not know any better. The press coverage glut of major companies copying each other (but still with no data, just "gut feelings") will make a transplant feel good about their new o̶f̶f̶i̶c̶e̶ c̶u̶b̶l̶i̶c̶l̶e̶ school cafeteria seat with a LAN jack. They'll have a newly enhanced selection in the vending machine, a discount on paid parking after spending two hours driving in a car they didn't need before RTO. (You thought there was affordable housing near our jewel of downtown real estate? Sorry!) Enjoy!

After decades of being fully remote, rooted by a partner with a career and children in schools, there was no way the rest of us would take this bait.

That was the point: AT&T can chase off those of us with higher salaries and accumulating pensions without getting snared by Federal age discrimination law. Well done, HR, well done! Give that people architect a Connection award.

It's not like these senior people bring any institutional knowledge, right? These legacy systems are going away, so what's a few billion lost while replacements take years to decipher what all we did while working remotely? (Hint: it wasn't laundry). Also, we have a few dedicated employees who will go from 60 to 80 to 120 hours per week to fill the gap.

"Ooops, what's a few billion lost?!" seems to be our business model, and apparently our well-compensated board of directors is just fine with that.
