Thread regarding Enbridge Inc. layoffs

What Keeps You Up at Night

Few years ago I started seeing colleagues let go, massive layoffs across industry. It hasn’t really stopped after that, pockets of layoffs here and there. Sometimes you would wonder how they choose who gets laid off.

If you wanna survive in this company just do the minimum but pretend you’re always busy. Always compliment your supervisor and always say the politically correct words. I saw people climbed the ladder with less education and qualifications but they talk big about themselves and their so called achievements.

You could be a high performer but gets nowhere up the ladder. I was once told “you have to sell yourself”. Is it not performance evaluation is all about? Nope, performance evaluation is just a formality. Your future depends on how well you can sell yourself to your narcissistic supervisor or manager.

Take it easy on the “hard work”, coz really nobody cares. Most people if not all are just their for the money. I saw someone let go due to “poor performance” but reality is the person got into argument with the incompetent supervisor.

The pay and benefits are good, the pension is also good - only if you can actually retire here. That lifetime pension you’re expecting might just turn into pension commuted value and severance package. At least they’re generous with the package.

So start evaluating your long term options.

There is no rhyme or reason for whom they lay off. High performer gone. Lazy slacker stays. I think they throw darts in Houston. They are likely as bad a darts as they are in communication and management. What a dysfunctional organization full of narcissistic lip flapping under achieving managers and directors. What it is, I do not know.

Well, I've seen four major changes in my leadership up to director, all of whom had new intentions. After almost a decade of change, I'm about as comfortable as one can reasonably be.

My point is that you're only just a number if you add not work to put a name and s face to it. Sure, maybe you'll still get cut no matter what... but your odds are much better.

To the last reply: don’t get too comfortable, it’s only a matter of time that you will become too expensive and it’s easy to hire contractors who are younger and more efficient. I saw a lot of people who did what you described but got laid off. When economy is not good and oil price goes down, you will be for a rude awakening that you’re just a number.

Someone new will always need come, younger, more educated, lots of work experience, cheaper, more efficient.

It works for you now and I hope it still works for you later when new management in your team comes in and new business direction gets implemented.

"Sell yourself" is good advice. If you aren't your own best advocate, don't expect somebody else to do it for you.

Be clearly useful, act professionally, make the best of the situations you find yourself in. Don't wallow in misery. Find and consume all training and educational opportunities you can.

Do those things and not only will you sleep better, you'll improve your position.

I was at ground zero from 2014 on. It worked for me.

With higher debt and high dividend company will look into cutting more costs. So prepare for more layoffs folks and more overtime non paid hours

Yeah there almost doesn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason to it at times. Sometimes they let people go who actually deserve it, other times it’s almost a knee jerk reaction and they just need warm bodies off of the books and it doesn’t matter how it gets done and of course there are times when there is an opportunity for them to get rid of somebody “they” don’t like regardless of performance. You cover more bases if you perform well and kiss a-s with exceptional zeal.
