If I may wade into the already deep waters here, like with any mentality that gains steam, there's an element of truth to it. For example, for a white person to feel as if minority people haven't been marginalized and/or neglected historically and in many cases currently is at best naive. So I don't understand the vitriol towards these folks who have it imbedded to feel this way. However, on the other side it is quite easy to see the mentality of how turning true diversity into the fulfilment of quotas immediately means the end of meritocracy and all the ramifications that come with it - the death of even the quest for a superior product and what that means for our jobs and our company's place in the marketplace, etc.
But with that element of truth garnering the cultural sea change that it has, there also exists the opportunity for greedy corporations to capitalize. There are no DEI departments in coal mines or on oil rigs. It becomes a thing when our jobs can largely be handled with internet access and a Zoom call. Ultimately though, DEI is a lose-lose, as it by its very existence it is a divisive tool: it alienates the people who don't agree, while it deceives the people who agree into actually thinking that the company cares about it. They don't. Corporations are barometers, not thermostats. They have decided that this is the way the wind is blowing and are grasping at ways to capitalize on it.
Humanity is by its very nature sectarian - millennial vs. boomer, sports rivalries, propane vs. charcoal, Baptist vs. Catholic, Democrat vs. Republican, and yes, race. The list is endless because we are human. This diversity of thought is part of what makes the human race so beautiful. Let's not make it ugly by assuming the worst of each other.
This forum is a grand place to pull for each other, share news, throw shade at our "betters". Let's not bite each other to bloody the waters :) (/soapbox)
