Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Where are my Management Co-Workers?

Did you not get the directive to RTO? I have to be here five days a week in my organization and I rarely see anyone else here. How do you get away with this?

Can they use failure to report to the office to deny severance? If so you will serve their purpose by not conforming. They need you gone but cannot afford severance on 20000 and still make Free cash flow.

Of course they can and they will. It's been explained many times that refusing to comply will get you fired for cause, which 100% means no severance, and in most states, no unemployment.

“For me, none of my co-workers or project clients are in my state.”

"But your physical coworkers are and you need to be in the office to collaborate with them."

Why would I need to be in the office to collaborate with them if they are in a different state? We collaborate via Teams, so I can be anywhere. The people in this office are in different organizations with different work projects. There is no collaboration to be had in this situation.

" Non-compliance is going to be a major factor when organizations need to reduce headcount, you can bet on that."

Downvoters on the above are:

  1. People ignoring the RTO mandate
  1. Downvoting because it gives them some strange reassurance that their flawed assumption that reports aren't now and never will be reviewed, or used for punitive purposes.

How long have you downvoters worked here?

You don't think that when they need to come up with xx number of heads to offer, that the usual metrics of performance ratings PLUS this "new" measure of compliance to an extensively communicated mandate is going to factor in? Keep downvoting and not going in. Good luck to you.

" It's a mad rush at my office to be the first to get in to grab a cube with actual working monitors at it. Also nobody uses the reservation system YWR at all, the few times I tried i pretty much got laughed at."

Shame on you then. No need to be in a mad rush. Use the reservation system. It works. Anyone in that spot during your reservation time does not have a leg to stand on, nor does someone that waltzes in after you're sitting there working (after having reserved the seat), informing you that it's "their" seat. Because it isn't.

I only have to go in once a month. I reserve the same workstation each time. I am reasonably confident someone sits there when I don't (as everything works, which is why I select it). But I make my reservation early (7:30 am) and most people don't waltz into this location until between 9 and 10 AM. No one has ever confronted me, though I have kind of been hoping someone will, just for fun.

I go in. I sit on my conference calls in the office. I listen to everyone else’s BS. I go home. I do the same thing now I did at home. I do it for much fewer hours on days when I am office bound. Facts! It is all because of envious crybabies who work a job that requires them to come into the office. Got to treat everyone the same, like a zero tolerance policy. It is lazy and ineffective.

“I’m not opposed to going into the office when there is a purpose to it but what I am doing is completely for show and a waste of time, money and gas.”

You are in a different station of life, You need to be interacting more with your local physical coworkers rather than working in silos.

The plan is working! A whole. Lot of severance payments will soon be saved.

You cannot save yourself. The hammer of 120 billion dollars of debt will not land lightly upon you.

Essential employees work from home. All others RTO, wet market bat waste contamination at hubs most likely. Outside techs are immune to bat waste from exposure to dog p-o landmines.

Favoritism rules the day. Only the "pets" get to work remotely now. All others must RTO or face the consequences. But nothing has changed at the Deathstar. Favoritism always coddled the "pets".

“ I'm going in 3x a week and have not as yet had one in person meeting. Mainly because or team is split across two locations so they all still have to be virtual meetings.

And not that being next to anyone would accomplish anything more anyway. Some projects such as mine have single workers on them. We give status once a week and that's the extend of it. Makes no sense to go in at all and has been this model long before everyone even worked from home. Even then we went into the office for virtual meetings. About the only thing new is that now it's MS Teams instead of Webex.”

This. I go in and do the EXACT same teams meetings I do from home except the WiFi is less reliable here (I go to a conf room). Been in the office around a dozen times since the return after Labor Day and have had two meetings with other people in the room total. May have one tomorrow. That’s it. I work with people all over the country and my boss and VP are not in my location. This won’t change if they make us go in 5 days a week or whatever.

I’m not opposed to going into the office when there is a purpose to it but what I am doing is completely for show and a waste of time, money and gas. BTW how does a telecom company have cr-ppy WiFi in their own effing offices?!

Good God, for once in your life stand up for yourself. Quit letting Stankey have his way with you. Call it rebelling with a cause if you want, just do it. Grow a backbone, Stankey is a proven loser on all counts. Following his leadership will certainly lead you down the wrong path. AT&T's best days can best be viewed in the rear view mirror. With unheard of debt to the tune of $140B, the next stop will be Chapter 11 for AT&T. It's way past time for Stankey and his entourage to leave, they will be doing AT&T and it's employee base a huge favor.

Can someone in the loop please tell us why the company is enforcing RTO in Dallas and Atlanta but not in the rest of the country. It’s spotty and only X days a month at best everywhere else. What’s the reason?

“Please. Dallas is full most days, so much that hundreds of people are working at f'ing cafe tables without monitors, keyboards or any equipment at all. They're not doing that for fun. It's because all desks are taken by 7:30a.

Get over yourself, figure out how to focus on what's important, and stop wasting time worrying about things that don't affect you. Do you enjoy your own heightened anxiety?”

Yes but a 100 other main downtown complexes are still empty like Nashville or Miami. These employees are still not coming in. It’s like 40000 people. Trust me Dallas and Atlanta are not the same as the rest of the country.

Most of my coworkers all agree that this company is lead by incompetent animals and we're just putting in the least amount of time and effort we can get away with without getting fired. Most of us used to always go above and beyond and were outstanding performers however none of us care to waste any precious energy on this joke of a company anymore. We all know we're targeted to be laid off any day any moment so we know we're moving on thus have nothing left to care about with this dying company.

I have it on good authority that RTO is not being enforced, it was never intended to be enforced. It's safe to simply ignore RTO since there are no negative repercussions. It's the same as it ever was at at&t, do what you want, when you want, without worry of consequenses.

We're back into the office now and productive as ever. Took awhile to get used to it, but having our our team together allows information sharing and we assist each other on addressing problems. Office spaces have been steadily improving, with new equipment and desks.

Two of our employees are still WFH. To be honest, we invite them to calls but they either ghost out or don't participate. Not sure what's going on there. One complains constantly. Wouldn't be surprised if this person is on interviews.

The fewer people comply, the worse it is going to get. 5 days and 40 hours on site required with VPN access shut off is not out of the realm of possibility. It is all at the whim of power tripping VPs. More people need to get jobs elsewhere or they will tighten the noose.

I literally drive 50 mins to the office to sit in an office all alone, talk to no one (other than socially) and then drive back home. It’s such a waste of ga$ and time. Instead of calling it collaboration, call it what it is -- a pay cut and headcount reduction.”

This entirely for me also. Just glad I didn’t have to move.
