AT&T Stankey’s Ageist Comments Really???

Is it true Stankey provided a QA response on the Q2 Earnings call with employees in July that seems crazy. I was laid off in March, so have been watching for it to hit the news. Did he really say we need a younger workforce and that age matters. That some floors in our hubs could be renamed ‘Shady Acres?’ I saw a post here about it but haven’t seen it anywhere else, so wondering if it is just exaggeration as I can’t believe he would say the quiet part out loud. Thanks for your input, as it just floors me.

He said that older workers cost too much and that they are essentially boat anchors.

I was there. What Stankey specifically said was:

"Our workforce needs to get younger."

He then justified the statement because he said (paraphrasing) a younger workforce more aligns with our customer base.

In the following days, I heard on the rumor mill that when looking around the office after his RTO mandate, he complained that the office looked like a nursing home.

He doesn't understand that his policies cause older workers to stick around and younger workers to leave.

Two days after the town hall, the head of HR decided to announce her intention to leave the business.

He said he was getting rid of older workers because younger workers are smarter and work harder.

This was highly exaggerated. Desperate employees at T who have no other realistic employment options have been trying to promote this false story ever since. This wasn’t the message delivered.
