Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

What's my Play? Really?

Just received semi-informal email stating I will receive a move letter on 10/18 since I am outside of a 'KNL'. Being asked if I would consider relo (on my dime) and to which location. They are requesting to provide an answer by Friday. Timeline: Oct - Notify of new KNL location, Nov - Determine if moving or not, Mid '24 - Relo and report to new KNL location. Feeling pretty pi---d as I've 'Exceeded' past 3 years in Amplify, have excellent peer reviews from other orgs in Quantum, and fairly recently received Service Excellence Award. Since this all went down, I feel our culture is sh-t and I'm not as happy, but I love my job and have a good AM and Director. Do I say 'maybe'? Ignore it and take pto on Fri? My real answer is 'Go F Urself', but I'm willing to play along if this possibly blows over by mid 2024. Big risk, however..
I am a Principal in National E&O role. Really no reason whatsoever to move to the location they are suggesting.
Note: No flexing going on here..just stating I'm not some slacker along for the ride. My role is highly technical, and I bust my a-s. I'll gladly dance with my VP/AVP if it were warranted. They are glorified admins sent in to do the dirty work..

The few people I know who were told they had to relocate fortunately ended up finding jobs in the company and are staying in their locations. They found positions from where they came as Managers in Operations. Everyone is so happy for them. As these individuals were all top notch, intelligent professionals and their presence and skill set is not replaceable. We are already feeling the after effects of losing them. Makes absolutely no sense.

I had the same ratings and was given severance without the option to move. The decision is not made at a level that is interested in ratings, those were for your own motivation to keep working hard. Its unfortunate. The biggest thing you will notice when the time comes is how much work you do/did was specific to the company and does not translate directly externally. It's a wake-up.

Sorry to see you go. You seem textbook smart but not smart enough to realize that T doesn’t care about talents, all they care about is money. I am doing the job of 3 people since they laid off my competent coworkers and now im left with braindeads who are just in it for a ride. Sh-t happens. Just say no to rto, get your severance and find something else.

April was not nearly a year ago. My state is not a hub and has over 300 managers still in place, not moving. Most people with managers in other states have been told very little. That is what keeping people in the dark means.

“I would not give an informal answer to anything. They’ve kept you in the dark so long you owe them nothing.”

WTAF are you talking about? The new RTO policy was announced nearly a year ago. Everyone has had months to decide whether they will be moving or not.

A semi-informal conversation with my boss when I honestly told him I wouldn't move, resulted in a surplus notice 2 weeks later. Be ready.

If you tell you will move, but know you will not, realize you're only postponing the inevitable. Personally, I decided it's better to leave now with severance and dedicate my time to a new career search.

Married? Kids? Local Parents who depend on you? How far is the KNL? How close to mod75 are you or do you have it already? Are you pension eligible now, not yet, or never? Need more info to analyze the situation.

The answer is no. There is no job guarantee after you move. People have moved and got laid off immediately after.

Don't be a fool. T is trying to extort you into doing something you don't want to. Tell Stink and crew to go pound sand, and begin to look for another job immediately.

Even better, tell them you will do anything they want, but when the time comes just don't. Force them into action.

Either way, you win because you leave T and will find someplace better. I know, because outside of Twitter, there is no place worse.

It’s really not.

Are the proposed locations more than 50 miles farther away than the one you currently have in Webphone? If so you'd get severance. If you don't plan to move, say no and get surplused, and take your severance.

If the new location is not more than 50 miles farther but is still too far to be commutable, then you'll get jack squat when they surplus you. In this case you have nothing to gain by being honest with them, so say yes you accept. That allows you to control your exit date, not them.

Did you not get the memo from stankey about the hubs are in Dallas and Atlanta ? Why do you sound so surprised ?

They let one of the smartest people I’ve ever meet leave because he didn’t want to move to Dallas, been doing the job we’re he was for 25 years but it didn’t matter. The brain drain currently underway simple because people don’t want to move to Dal/Atl is going to cause real problems

If you don’t respond it will be considered a no and you will be slated for surplus.

Actually a lot of people have been told that relocation is done. I don’t know however if they were lied to and it will come back to get them next year.

The company has rewarded your "exceeds" performance and service award by telling you to move. You know they aren't just asking. When someone or something shows their true colors you need to pay attention and make decisions accordingly. It sounds like they are trying to get a pool of "no's" and then see who to fire out of that pool.

I would tell them no and start looking for another job. And I would also start doing only the minimum necessary. No incentive for you to go over and above now that they have revealed what they think of you.

" Note: No flexing going on here..just stating I'm not some slacker along for the ride"

But, that's exactly what you are doing. I am not trying to be an a$$, but you expelled a lot of hot air talking about yourself and your ratings , awards, Quantum feedback, etc. You do seem like an intelligent person in so far as one can grasp from your post.

So it baffles me that you have not figured out yet that no one cares about your ratings , awards, Quantum feedback, etc. Literally NO ONE. Excepting you, apparently. None of it has anything to do with what has been going on the past few months.

Seems you were sitting and watching the chaos unfold around you, and thinking to yourself that none of it would ever touch you, considering your "Principal" title and your ratings , awards, Quantum feedback, etc.

Wake the F up.

The company doesn’t give one F if you are a top performer. They want people gone..that’s the bottom line here.

HUMBLE BRAG!
Okay just a brag, if OP is that critical to the success of at&t, why hasn't he risen to the top? Something tells me he thinks he is better than what he actually is. That's usually the case with cats like this. He got lucky with a manager that likes him and gave him good marks, big deal! Any big accomplishments that propelled at&t to new heights? Doubtful!

Today OP has a great AM and Director but fails to realize that all good things do come to an end. No guarantees either or both of them will even still be in the same position or with the company after the changes are completed. Odds are their superiors will be replaced with people that have no clue as to what the department does and will push for results they themselves do not understand. Good luck to the OP it is just a job. Nothing more.

So you took no action concerning RTO when you thought it was only affecting others? Now that you’ve been targeted, you are up in arms? See the door.

This was stated back in may I think. All national employees that are not customer facing will need to move to one of 9 hub cities later this year but mostly Atlanta or Dallas. Not word for word but this was the announcement Stankey made.

RTO isn’t going anywhere. It is a critical strategy to help restructure T. Your position will benefit from increased collaboration rather than the current limitations. This isn’t personal.

Make a decision to move or notify that you decline. Don’t rush termination for cause.

Thank you to remind me that stuff, I have forgot that it exists as I never believed that T takes it seriously toward employee.

So, is it the employees outside the hubs that think this isn't real and will blow over in a few months? You are really sheltered from reality and I'd suggest that you enjoy it while you can. We, in the hubs, have been living this reality since early July ... this isn't going anywhere and, if anything, is only going get worse.

Unless you're trying to hold on for retirement soon, why would you stay at AT&T?

Inform them you will move and collect the paychecks. Apply anywhere and realize they don’t want anyone in the USA. Ask for extension as timeline comes near. Look forward to leaving the toxicity and starting next chapter. Choose to be happy.

Remember, this has 0 to do with how much of an outstanding employee that you clearly have been. Instead, this is ALL about one thing and one thing only, downsizing and the company trying to pay down DEBT, since they have overspent and accumulated MASSIVE debt due to pi-s poor decision making by the C-Suite!
