Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Where are you applying?

Verizon and T-Mobile are also laying people off, as is Comcast and pretty much all other major telecoms. What's left for those of us who are hoping for at least some job security at our next company? With things being the way they are, I honestly have no idea what to do.

Looking into other areas is excellent advice, as the previous post said. Some more tips:

  1. Don't focus exclusively on big-name companies; medium & smaller companies need experienced people too, get fewer applicants, and appreciate "brand name" experience. Don't be afraid of being a big fish in a smaller pond.
  2. Have you worked with any corporate clients or vendors or suppliers? If so, look to see if they have jobs.
  3. Follow the beaten path -- look at LinkedIn to see where others in your role went after leaving. If someone went to another company you're interested in, contact them.
  4. Finding your next job will give renew your confidence in how to find a job, and make you less afraid of another layoff. That becomes your security.

The best strategy is to re-think your next company. It's tempting to make a lateral move into another tech/telecom company, but they are all the same and will all treat you like a vending machine co---m at a truck stop.

Instead, look to other areas. Education. Government. Non-Profit. Healthcare. All of these places need qualified tech people, and they are completely different beasts than T.

Expand your horizons and you'll find an incredible number of opportunities. As George Clinton said, Free Your Mind And Your A$$ Will Follow

I just started working for an Alliance channel solution provider. Commission pay is significantly better but I am a bit nervous not having a salary. It's exactly what T wants us to do.

We’ll never make more money than we do now at T. We all know it. We are doomed financially after the next surplus. Grab some reams of paper from the copier and sell them on eBay. What else can we do?

Sounds like my in-law! Says he could make more if he retired. He keeps going to work every day and complains about his job.

"I already have some potential jobs lined up all of them pay significantly better than ATT."

Sounds like a tech in my group. For the last 6 years, he has been saying "I can get a job making $200K a year anytime I want to" Our reply to him: "Why in the h*ll are you still here?"

"Costco"
The food court or hauling in the shopping carts? I'd chose food court, maybe they won't see me raiding the soft serve.

Already have some potential jobs lined up all of them pay significantly better than ATT.

If you have some lined up, and they pay "significantly" better, what the heck are you waiting for? The sooner you move, the better for you, do you now realize there are now hundreds if not thousands of people fighting for every open position out there?

Whatever severance you're counting on is not worth it if you can just go somewhere better now.

Where am I applying? Let's see...

Freaking everywhere:)

The way this job market is right now, is people are taking whatever they can get. The times of targeting and getting into any specific companies are over, for now.

Specifically on the topic of layoffs. It doesn't matter. Yes, they all lay off, and at the same time hire people that other companies laid off. It's a big work force realignment, and at the same time, they're trying to devalue our labor by hiring at lower rates. You think the inflation is bad? Let's take another look in 2-3 years when we all realize our wages got slashed on top of it. Good luck everyone.

They are taking applications for snack bar butcher at most local theaters. Do you like to serve up hot buttered popcorn, hot dogs, ice cold soda drinks, and candy? This is your chance! Most theaters eliminated staff with the advent of covid, now they are hiring again. Please apply today.

Plenty of opportunities out there. Networking is the key. You can apply to LinkedIn jobs all you want, most of those are not good companies and always hiring due to turnovers. The good jobs are never posted. I’m just waiting till the end of the year or surplus, which ever comes first. Already have some potential jobs lined up all of them pay significantly better than ATT.

It's just a job. There a plenty of other things out there to do. Take an inventory of your experience and really ask yourself what other interests you may have. If you get a severance, use that time to learn a new skill, or break into a new type of work.

I would build a plan A,B, and C. When you're done with that, make a plan D. Have confidence in your ability to shape your own path and future...don't depend on T to do that for you. If it comes...you'll be ready. Ain't no thing...

T is also laying people off AND hiring at the same time. It was clearly stated in a recent Sambar town hall that T hires 30k-40k people a year.

True and the vast majority of these people are hired as contractors and/or hired outside the U.S. so they have at least a 4:1 ratio.

4 international employees for what they were paying 1 domestic employee.

My guess is those other places are attempting to rid themselves of the old white guys. As long as you take a salary less than the person and since you are a newbie with less PTO, etc then the person you are replacing it is a win. There is always contract work, which we know these companies embrace.
