Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

BREAKING - Centene Poised for Layoffs Next Week, Documents Reveal

A round of layoffs at St. Louis, Mo .-based Centene is set for Oct. 2 to Oct. 5. The plans are detailed in a 13-page set of confidential HR documents entitled “Supporting December Transitions” obtained by Health Payer Specialist. The last day of work for the fired brigade will be Dec. 8, 2023, the HR documents say.

The instructions in the HR documents offer a “notification meeting script” for those due to lose their jobs, one that suggests the number of firings will be large enough to have an impact on Centene’s bottom line.

In one-on-one meetings with employees who will be fired, the HR workers are instructed to say, “Thank you for meeting with me today. Over the last 18 months Centene has been actively working on its Value Creation Plan. . . We are facing headwinds related to the [Medicaid] redetermination process and the impact of Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.”

The script continues, “that unfortunately results in the elimination of your position. Your termination date will be Dec. 8, 2023.”

In the HR documents, the targeted workers are told they have 45 days from termination to sign or refuse to sign an agreement outlining the terms of severance. Workers will get health coverage and other benefits through Dec. 31, 2023.

The HR documents also include a “save the date” notice telling the HR workers of sessions set for Sept. 27 and 28 on “managing employee reactions” to learning they are losing their jobs.

One directive in the documents says the managers will learn to recognize and deal with the signs of shock, defined as when the worker appears “quiet, tearful, sad, and unresponsive.” Another learning module will tell the managers how to deal with worker anger, seen when a soon-to-be former employee “raises voice, holds aggressive posture, becomes argumentative.”

Still others will likely be in denial, seen when the worker “appears confused, avoiding eye contact.” Far easier for the managers will be those with an air of resignation, one who “appears calm, lacking in emotion.”

The training sessions are meant to make it easier on managers as well as the employees being terminated.

The unlucky employees “will exit the organization with respect, care, and concern,” the directives promise.

Centene did not respond to requests to discuss the pending layoffs.

Maybe they have some dignity in their veins and bring new leadership.

Leaks where? If there were all these leaks then why are people so shocked? Where are you even getting all your information?

So where is the leak for the next layoffs?

“There are 100% more cuts coming. UM and Medicare targeted first in rounds 1 and 2 due to Stars and all that. There is a lot of federal hooplah at CMS and states and Medicaid redeterminations. Once that is more visible, we get round 3, and it will be deep.”

Reply- Will UM be targeted again next round(s)? Half my team got cut Monday, curious if other half of us will be next.

To all of the people reading the latest few comments and nothing more, THIS WAS ALL LEAKED WELL IN ADVANCE.

The cuts in February 2020? Leaked in advance. The cuts in August of 2023? Leaked. This round? Leaked. And yes, it's been leaked with more coming in November (for January THAT's the tough one for management to sell) and December (for February - that's the easy one, as the leftovers both breathe a sigh of relief that it wasn't them and take time off around Christmas). It's also been said it was 20% across the board.

If you want to deny it, go for it. But don't accuse others of making up rumors or fear-mongering. Everything stated beforehand has come true.

Like any other layoff: those impacted will be notified whenever that is, and those not impacted might never hear a word about it because it wasn’t for you.
There’s no such thing as “safe” in any business; everything is ever-changing. One thing for certain: we will reorg after this. Worrying about doing 16 people’s job after this—the work will always be there regardless if you work 60 hours a week burnt out or if you just do what you can handle. They obviously don’t care about the work when they set aside a billion dollars to settle for all the ways they’ve done wrong so far.

You’ve got to try to find some peace of mind because this blog, this company, these people you thought you were “in” with are not going to give that to you. It could be ANY of us at ANY time.

Rather than obsess over being next, now more than ever, get your affairs in order. With your money, with your creditors and everyone you pay your bills to, find out about hardship programs that you may potentially need to qualify for. You may be surprised how mortgage and car payments and loans lenders are willing to work with you. You were notified of an impending layoff a week ago. What have you done this week to prepare? Grab the reins.

It’s insensitive to continue to ask around; you could be talking to someone who was already let go and too stunned to let any of you know. And with having to continue on for 2 more months…Be real. And be NICE.

Stop panicking and get a true grip on your life and getting things in order so that you can smartly take the next step that’s best for you.

I pray that we all get thru this mental anguish and that we all find some sort of peace.

Stop groveling and giving them your power and peace of mind. In case you didn't know, you should learn this real quick, they don't care about you. Your PLs and others are NOT your friends.

"My senior leader just let is slip that Compliance is moving to Shared Services."

Centralize compliance as an enterprise function just like claims, call center, pop health/UM, medical affairs, etc. Lots of stuff still being done locally at the health plan that would be more efficient (i.e. fewer FTEs) if centralized. Contractually required key staff positions like COs and FWA would remain local, but the boots on the ground would all become corporate employees under one enterprise structure.

Whether it happens and exactly how or how soon, who knows! 🙃

Centene and Sunshine Health must be out of their minds if they think they're going to lay people off and then have the people that are left over do more work. I'm doing bare minimum.

I was notified today that all layoffs in my dept have been completed and I still have a position. While I'm relieved to continue working here, I feel terrible for all my coworkers that were notified they would no longer have a job as of Dec 1st. I've already given my info out for work references if need be. We went from over 40 people, to almost 10 or less.

I’m curious where people are hearing there’s more layoffs. Agreed with others that I don’t know what Drew was referring to with his 3% comment. Isn’t this current layoff targeting a 3% reduction of workforce, so maybe that’s it?

I also re-watched the Town Hall, and it's unclear what the CFO is referring to when he mentions 3% cuts -- it sounds like layoffs to me, but others think he was referring to revenue.

Are PL notifying their teams if they are let go? Are they having to log off immediately afterwards? I don’t understand what is going on.

Just rewatched the Town Hall, and with the way Drew seemed to be mincing his words, are we sure his comment of shrinkage was meant as more cuts? He jumped back and forth between talking about member shrinkage to revenue shrinkage then discussed hiring more people. Is it possible he also made comment of “a little more than 3%” since the 2,000 employees is “a little more than 3%” or our current employee pool?

Where are people hearing that there are more rounds of layoffs? My VP said they were done? My HEDIS director received his 12/1/23. What is the future for the quality and HEDIS coordinators?

Why can't employees unionize? I am not a big fan of unions, but in this case employees would have some power against this process and treatment.

Screenshot everything for your own records. Complaints about inadequate training, workload, feeling bullied or cornered. Screenshot testimony from this forum. I’m not about to work under duress for fear I may not get my severance. I smell a lawsuit. Truly. I’m gathering every piece of evidence I have on this place that has prevented me from doing my work. They have us right where they want us. Scared.

Those who have been told “your job is safe for now” and didn’t get laid off. ⚠️ RUN!!!!!!!!!!!! You will have to pick up on the work of those who are leaving. Don’t stay! They will only make sure you are part of the next laid off wave. Centene doesn’t care about their employees. Laying off people while hiring new ones and open positions. Something isn’t right.

For those of you who’ve been laid off my heart goes out to you. I don’t think anyone on this forum really knows the who or why. Is there awkwardness, relief, even survivor’s guilt for making it through this cut? Probably. Do you want to hear from your coworkers? IMHO this time is about you. What can a coworker do for you?

Being one of the laid off people is very difficult. Sitting here working, trying to figure out what to do. None of my co workers have even said a word to me. It's like they are scared to talk to me like it's contagious.... This is going to be a difficult couple of months. I have no choice though. I am a single parent and have tons of bills to pay.

Even if I don’t get laid off, I will be looking for another job ASAP. It is not fair to endure this uncertainty of not knowing if you will be laid off now or a few months from now. They should not get rid of hard-working and quality employees. If that’s what they want (to lose their workforce to save money), that’s what they will get it. But I can assure them, quality and productivity will only decline from now on until they lose all contracts and eventually they end up selling out or going bankrupt.

Agree with all of what you said but highly doubt managers are pushing back trying to figure out the workload. One team lost 75%.

All - the article said 10/2 through 10/5 but don’t assume it’s that cut and dry.

Affected people may be OOO, some may be dodging calls or meetings, etc. Some managers may be finding out and pushing back until they can get a transition plan in place.

I’d expect the announcements to slow down but not necessarily end on 10/5. Just my opinion but there are a hundred reasons why I would not assume you’re safe after 10/5.

I haven’t slept properly on this job in over two years, while I do the work of 3-4 people.

I can’t imagine how they think they’ll continue to function after this, they’re barely functioning now.

Today is my last day (not from a layoff) and I have to begrudgingly admit that I’m a lot gladder to be leaving than I thought I’d be. I was actually on the fence about accepting this new offer the entire time.

Centene is just a broken org. I don’t think it can be fixed because it doesn’t want to be fixed, and that’s true of more than executive leadership.

Centene you laid off people that worked 10+ years and 20+ but yet you hiring overseas people and have open positions. And took away our bonus and everything. Terrible. You even took away the name from Fidelis for what? To laid off so many good working people. It’s disgusting.
