Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

BREAKING - Centene Poised for Layoffs Next Week, Documents Reveal

A round of layoffs at St. Louis, Mo .-based Centene is set for Oct. 2 to Oct. 5. The plans are detailed in a 13-page set of confidential HR documents entitled “Supporting December Transitions” obtained by Health Payer Specialist. The last day of work for the fired brigade will be Dec. 8, 2023, the HR documents say.

The instructions in the HR documents offer a “notification meeting script” for those due to lose their jobs, one that suggests the number of firings will be large enough to have an impact on Centene’s bottom line.

In one-on-one meetings with employees who will be fired, the HR workers are instructed to say, “Thank you for meeting with me today. Over the last 18 months Centene has been actively working on its Value Creation Plan. . . We are facing headwinds related to the [Medicaid] redetermination process and the impact of Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.”

The script continues, “that unfortunately results in the elimination of your position. Your termination date will be Dec. 8, 2023.”

In the HR documents, the targeted workers are told they have 45 days from termination to sign or refuse to sign an agreement outlining the terms of severance. Workers will get health coverage and other benefits through Dec. 31, 2023.

The HR documents also include a “save the date” notice telling the HR workers of sessions set for Sept. 27 and 28 on “managing employee reactions” to learning they are losing their jobs.

One directive in the documents says the managers will learn to recognize and deal with the signs of shock, defined as when the worker appears “quiet, tearful, sad, and unresponsive.” Another learning module will tell the managers how to deal with worker anger, seen when a soon-to-be former employee “raises voice, holds aggressive posture, becomes argumentative.”

Still others will likely be in denial, seen when the worker “appears confused, avoiding eye contact.” Far easier for the managers will be those with an air of resignation, one who “appears calm, lacking in emotion.”

The training sessions are meant to make it easier on managers as well as the employees being terminated.

The unlucky employees “will exit the organization with respect, care, and concern,” the directives promise.

Centene did not respond to requests to discuss the pending layoffs.

Organic growth is the most important. The company would need a strong HR and leadership team to attain that. How many Sr. VPs can tell you the strength and weakness of their entire team? How many VPs and how many Directors? I have seen the same projects fail for not changing processes. Same results=insanity. We have groupthink here and no one willing to change the process to achieve better outcomes. Former employees feel that they either don’t care or only concerned about their bonuses that they are guaranteed and this is just about c suite. Some leaders haven’t taken a look at their own org chart, just clueless collecting a check and allowing projects to fail purposely. Honestly who holding them accountable? Someone should start a consulting company to come in and show this place how to operate.

Not convinced about being forced out by hedge fund. He announced the deal with hedge fund in December, took medical leave 2 months later in February, then passed in April.

I can't believe he was clueless of his illness.

It sounds like he was getting his affairs in order as he knew he didn't have much longer.

I have zero clue if centene would be in a better or worse place now if he had not became too ill to remain as CEO.

I am legacy Wellcare and the introduction to Centene, its systems, policies, and mass layoffs of 3,000 people and elimination of 1,500 open positions in 2021 while he still took home something like 25 million dollars did not endear him to me. Looking around it seemed like he had been building a Frankenstein of a company stitch together with what felt like 100 subsidiaries and no real or proven plan to successfully integrate the company. Back then I had the impression that everything was a mad dash, last ditch effort to build wealth to leave for his family and legacy.

But maybe that was my bias being a forced newcomer that didn't know the beginnings of the company. Heck I never even heard of centene until the buyout! Maybe he always operated feverishly buying up smaller companies instead of growing the corporate business organically. Umm, maybe it was all the hedge funds idea to buy all the little companies, maybe he didn't have the power and decision making abilities I thought he had at the time of the Wellcare buyout. I never really thought about that until just now.

No clue, but the fact that he held onto the company for like 20 something years makes me feel like when he was healthy he was not the type of person who would let someone force him out of what he was truly proud of building.

No, he was forced out by a hedge fund, along with several board members. You can do a google search for "Centene hedge fund" and easily find this information, but here are a couple articles to review:

"They forced Neidorff out"

Didn't he hold as tight as he could even while one foot was already in the grave!

I thought the grim reaper was who forced him out.

The writing has been on the wall since they forced Neidorff out, and then started outsourcing and consolidating away from the local plans. I personally have been preparing for it since then, and I would much rather I be laid off than anyone else on my team, because of that. Centene's major stockholders have one goal in mind, and that is to sell, sell, sell. Sarah is not calling the shots. She's a figurehead only.

Be smart now because it's highly likely that you will be let go, at some point. Make plans. Prepare yourself. Do you need to find another job? Do it. Do you need to figure out where money will come from while you either look for a new job or retire? DO IT. Figure it out now because there is a strong possibility it will happen, so don't put yourself in a situation where you're blindsided and stuck. I am very lucky and do not have to deal with a toxic environment here, but I have in past jobs. Trust me when I tell you that the best thing you can do is choose yourself and your sanity. Leave now. Don't let them take your peace and your sanity, because it will never, ever be worth it. Best wishes to all.

Trust when I say those Surveys are not confidential, they know who you are and WILL tell the PL , HR, Director , management etc etc , who you are and what you wrote. Take it from someone that was tortured for many years and even went to a different position and the PL was put as my PL there as well. Centene knew what they where doing, she didn’t win , she’s gone, quit and I’m still here.. exhausted to say the least RETALIATION is real !!!!! And the mental torture has taken its toll, still dealing with it PTSD. I’m not a young person and to start over I can’t , I keep my head down and try to be invisible, I never want to be retaliated on again for telling the truth. Be careful on those surveys , it may be what there using to do what there doing.. who knows.

@hpcb+1oNUjeJa That is very true, I never say what I want to on there but it’s quite amusing to see them squirm with the same anxiety they project onto us all year. And I like to read others comments . I hate that most feel the same way , but it’s also comforting knowing it’s not just me!

Everyone is aware that the VPs share the results of the surveys. The PL know exactly who they verbally abuse so doing that will make it worse. If you notice recently they all receive high scores due to the sharing of results. No one wants an hour long bashing - team meeting for being honest. I rather deal with the regular screaming, thats an extra lash out that we don’t want . Lol

I could not have said this any better!
Definitely feel like we have no voice and all we do it sit and take the mental abuse, threats of losing our job if we don’t kiss their a~ses . I wish I could afford to walk away and tell them where to shove it. I most certainly have a fire lit under me to find a company that will value me and treat me like the human I am.
PL and above need to learn how the process is done so when crisis strikes, they can roll up their sleeve and help. But they don’t want to know the process they just want a title that allows them to bark orders and verbally abuse those of us who do know the process and they don’t like it when you have a backbone and stand up for yourself and what’s right . Then their only defense is to use threats. I’m almost certain those higher up have no clue what happens below deck.

I know myself and many coworkers are anxious for the pulse survey to come .

If you are on the front line, you know how members and providers feel. They are the reason the company operates. PL have been driving this place into the iceberg. The PL creating toxic environments were not let go, so just sit back and watch. We can only scream so much until they hear us. Now we are quiet overwhelmed without a voice and let them carry on as they have that led us to the poor numbers we see today. (I don’t care about punctuation or grammar) If you saw emails from PL in this org you would understand.

I am thinking that "exceeds expectations" really means "Hey we knew you were going to do sh---y work but you proved us wrong - your still doing sh---y work just not as much as we thought" How do you tell your whole org that they are "great" and "We appreciate all the hard work you do" just to turn around and tell them in the next breath that they are the reason for your fu-kups? And then reinforce it by laying them off right before the holidays AND don't give me that "there is never a good time to lay people off BS" . This ranks up there with the whole "Yes I know you are working from home and absolutely never interact with the public and instead of letting you choose for yourself because that's a private decision that I, as your employer, have no business knowing much less discussing with you and instead of just letting you continue to work from home as you have been doing to quell my unfounded fear of catching the vid we have decided instead to demand you shoot this unknown substance into your bloodstream or else we will fire you" - yes Centene has questionable motives and no moral compass. ANd before the 1% chime in with whatever issues you have with people that didn't get the shot, etc - save it because I don't care what you think one way or the other thanks

  • Florida is an at-will employment state, which means an employment contract can end at any time and for any reason as long as it is not illegal and without warning. As such, it is generally possible and legal for an employer to fire a worker for refusing to work overtime.

Pay transparency- CCRN here let go, high performer. Pretty sure they are trying to save $$$ and hire someone to do it for less than I do. $42.22 an hour. I heard they are hiring nurses in the Phillipines for Ambetter to do concurrent review and only a matter of time before the job is done by AI, the way they want us to do it.. I would think long and hard about continuing with this company if this is your role.

Good grief I don’t know about anyone else but I’m sick of being used and mentally abused. Obviously those who were laid off are using all their unused PTO before Dec (rightfully so) but I’m so over the mandatory OT, escalations etc. this company has gone to sh-t or he-l in a workbasket! Was this the plan?
To ruin 3000+lives right before the holidays then make the rest work overtime and become more worn down? I believe more layoffs are coming. I wouldn’t t be surprised if they do performance reviews, give the annual merit increase then layoff anyone who gets pushed past their pay “cutoffs”. Or if this company tanks all together and sells out. We can’t keep up with quality when all they do is push quantity. The faster you expect things to get done and out the door, the more mistakes will be made and that will surely come back around to bite. Especially when they let really good workers and leaders go, now , we’re left with the ones who don’t know WTF they are doing, if they are coming or going and they don’t care because they can just push it off on those who work the “front lines”.
There is no work life balance here. People have kids, families etc to also tend to.

How many people that were laid off on some sort of ada accommodation or fmla leave? I was, and my continuation was denied right after I was laid off. I wonder if the employees Centene deems to be too costly are getting let go. Please let me know if this applies to you as well.

Not sure what’s worse, the layoffs or the ones that haven’t been laid off but feeling like they’re being purposely pushed out. Some don’t know which PL are being laid off so some PL may be taking their frustration out on employees. Is there a plan to make the people who weren’t laid off miserable, because it’s working?

My invite to be notified of the layoff was tasteless. Subject: "Touchbase". Really? 15 year employee and this is how you get treated. Also, stop with the jokes during meetings and acting like the laid off employees are gone, we're still here!! In the end we are just numbers, no need to feel attached to work or anyone there because they will drop you like a bad habit, without hesitation. And not even have the courtesy to tell you why they chose you. I am not proud to work there, don't think I would recommend anyone work there after experiencing their tasteless, unprofessional break. I'm praying to Sarah London's downfall, while Michael Neidorff is turning in his grave. RIP Neidorff, a true leader!

@anfa+1oNUjeJa - i think this is what you're referring to?

To all of the people reading the latest few comments and nothing more, THIS WAS ALL LEAKED WELL IN ADVANCE.

The cuts in February 2020? Leaked in advance. The cuts in August of 2023? Leaked. This round? Leaked. And yes, it's been leaked with more coming in November (for January THAT's the tough one for management to sell) and December (for February - that's the easy one, as the leftovers both breathe a sigh of relief that it wasn't them and take time off around Christmas). It's also been said it was 20% across the board.

If you want to deny it, go for it. But don't accuse others of making up rumors or fear-mongering. Everything stated beforehand has come true.

I am not sure how they those power ranks , but if it is is based on the ability of firing people in a indiscriminately, senseless and stupid manner at the detriment of your own company, the poet should number 1 on the list. Maybe is just based on job you hold , I guess you are powerful as long as you have the job regardless of being and id--t, or maybe her power derives from her a-s, who knows, it seems to me more like Forbes charges company for that sh-t, who knows what is the underhanded deal.

Has anyone see cnet? They blasted Sarah the poets face and stated she’s one of fortunes most powerful women. The company really thought this was a good idea? How horrible is it to see the face of the woman who doesn’t care about the 2,000 employees lives she just ruined? This company just proves over and over again they do not care about you. This layoff isn’t the first - just the first to be exposed and it won’t be the last

Rehab Medical and Dme intake department should all be fired aling with their supervisor Kandi Horne. You can make as many errors as you want and still get promoted. Kandi rarely speaks to them and definitely doesnt hold them accountable. Centene can save money by firing Kandi and replace her with a plant. They both do the same amount of work.

To someone who doesn’t end up paying thousands in taxes , sure would be great, but I’ve worked enough OT the last 3 years to know when to stop and now it’s being forced! I’m already maxed out, burnt out and over it. Especially after all this BS!!

Mandatory OT sounds good. We arent allowed to go over 1 minute passed our time. At the end of the week i once had 40.22 hours. My super made me change it to just 40!

I feel nearly sui-idal. Clocking in is the worst part of the day upon receiving the news I’ve been terminated. It makes no sense that they’d offer job placement help AFTER your last day of employment. I can’t think of any other reason to keep us captive like this other than to see us suffer.

There’s hardly any work for me. I’m being assigned work I don’t know how to do. I just sit here and stare. I have no motivation to do anything but I’m fearful I won’t receive my severance check. This is one of the most traumatizing things that’s ever happened to me.
