Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

BREAKING - Centene Poised for Layoffs Next Week, Documents Reveal

A round of layoffs at St. Louis, Mo .-based Centene is set for Oct. 2 to Oct. 5. The plans are detailed in a 13-page set of confidential HR documents entitled “Supporting December Transitions” obtained by Health Payer Specialist. The last day of work for the fired brigade will be Dec. 8, 2023, the HR documents say.

The instructions in the HR documents offer a “notification meeting script” for those due to lose their jobs, one that suggests the number of firings will be large enough to have an impact on Centene’s bottom line.

In one-on-one meetings with employees who will be fired, the HR workers are instructed to say, “Thank you for meeting with me today. Over the last 18 months Centene has been actively working on its Value Creation Plan. . . We are facing headwinds related to the [Medicaid] redetermination process and the impact of Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.”

The script continues, “that unfortunately results in the elimination of your position. Your termination date will be Dec. 8, 2023.”

In the HR documents, the targeted workers are told they have 45 days from termination to sign or refuse to sign an agreement outlining the terms of severance. Workers will get health coverage and other benefits through Dec. 31, 2023.

The HR documents also include a “save the date” notice telling the HR workers of sessions set for Sept. 27 and 28 on “managing employee reactions” to learning they are losing their jobs.

One directive in the documents says the managers will learn to recognize and deal with the signs of shock, defined as when the worker appears “quiet, tearful, sad, and unresponsive.” Another learning module will tell the managers how to deal with worker anger, seen when a soon-to-be former employee “raises voice, holds aggressive posture, becomes argumentative.”

Still others will likely be in denial, seen when the worker “appears confused, avoiding eye contact.” Far easier for the managers will be those with an air of resignation, one who “appears calm, lacking in emotion.”

The training sessions are meant to make it easier on managers as well as the employees being terminated.

The unlucky employees “will exit the organization with respect, care, and concern,” the directives promise.

Centene did not respond to requests to discuss the pending layoffs.

Our VP told us to log on 10-15 mins early that they are limiting people to the Town Hall. Well, THAT'S not suspicious at all.

I was told by my supervisor that a small fraction of employees will be allowed to attend the meeting. I find it odd bc it's never been that way on the past. She suggests logging in around 230pm EST to ensure you have a spot.

It’s a meager attempt for sure. It’s something for some people. I’m not sure what the most conducive option is in having our voices amplified. Evil people with heavy pockets will always prevail.

So is the hiring freeze only for internal? Like theirs open jobs online. Maybe trying to hire in new at a lower rate?

I'm sick of this "stay positive, stay productive" BS being spouted by leadership when 66k+ are on pins and needles wondering how we're going to survive financially if we're one of the unlucky ones. I'm one paycheck from living in my car and I know most of my team are in the same boat. Leadership is disconnected from reality and how they are handling this is exhibit A.

When writing your governor, you do realize Centene donates quite heavily to both parties, and often has relatives of the governor/parties on their payroll as lobbyists. You can follow the paper trail, lobbyists are published and who they represent. The fines the states received this year are nothing in comparison to the profits Centene and it’s subsidiaries receive from keeping the contracts with the states. All the insurance companies have them in their back pocket. So just be cautious, it likely will get back to your boss in some way, shape, or form.

What happened to Anika? Do they gave her a job as a C - Suite officer, they put her in the media and 6 months later they disappeared her? Similar to James Murray, 6 months as COO? . Just to name a couple, there are more of them that don't get a chance to try. Do this people know what they are doing at all? Or they just have unlimited money to hire and payoff executives? When I look at this company I only see chaos, underhanded deals, lack of transparency, poor leadership,l just don't see this place getting any better. Maybe some of Centene fans can elaborate on the plan?

Navigating a company's landscape can indeed be quite a challenge when you're met with a situation where there are currently 416 open positions (at least according to the latest website data), an apparent internal hiring freeze, and the recurring occurrence of layoffs, with both August and October this fall witnessing such events. It does raise the question: What truly guides Centene's direction?

The hiring freeze is news to me, and we’ve been interviewing for a position for a while now.

That said, I’ve also given my notice, so maybe I’m too persona non grata to be told at this point.

I truly liked my team here and I still like the majority of them, but the culture at Centene is so broken, and quite a few people here show a mean streak easily when challenged. Many of them start looking for scapegoats immediately. I’ve never worked anywhere with such toxic undercurrents, and that includes working at small businesses run by little Napoleons, lol.

I’m glad to be moving on to something else soon. Who knows, I may have been one of the 2000 despite the fact that we’re hiring for my role.

I hope this all being leaked and aired in public, unlike the round in August, becomes a wakeup call at Centene for both leadership and labor. It really needs one.

Here is a template for those interested in writing to your state governors/attorney generals. Will it make a difference? Who knows. But if you feel strongly and inclined to do so:

A company called Centene, which employs thousands of (insert your state here) , have been quietly laying off thousands of people after CEO's rake in millions. This company has and will continue to be sued by the states for overcharging Medicaid dr-gs and making the states foot the bill.

They have put aside 1.6 billion dollars into a reserve for upcoming lawsuits. This year they have paid 215 million dollars to California after being sued for overcharging Medicaid dr-gs. They have paid Indiana 66.5 million after being sued for overcharging Medicaid dr-gs. They have paid Texas 166 million dollars after being sued for overcharging Medicaid dr-gs. Centene has paid 13 states a total of 596 million dollars after being sued for fraudulently overcharging Medicaid dr-gs.

I am imploring that you look into Centene and break contracts with them for their history of criminal business practices. They are preying on their members and employees alike. This should be concerning country wide for the implications it has on categorically needy people’s access to healthcare and prescription medications. CEO’s, VP’s, and board members of Centene are pocketing millions upon millions of dollars while terminating thousands of employees to keep up with legal fees

You can see this anonymous forum which has gone viral containing employee testimony. https://www.thelayoff.com/t/1oNUjeJa#comment_form

I hope to hear back,

  • I doubt they will actually give us any info today. They will likely give a bs reason for the layoffs in the townhall and try to justify them but I doubt they will tell us who is effected.

The answer to this is simple. State level aid (federally subsidized or otherwise) is throttled to a pitifully inadequate level and more people on unemployment seasonally (as they see it) really has no impact on their personal bottom lines, even if the state is broke (on paper). They’ll continue to get their (state sized) kickbacks and could not care less.

We are ruled by criminals. This goes no matter what political party they pretend to belong to. The people in charge could not care less about public coffers or the state of them.

I’m sure we can all identify the VPs, Managers, Directors that are underperforming. Everyone pointing out the CEO but there are Directors (large bonuses) that need to go, hence all the lawsuits that are pasted on this post.

I wonder if the states are okay that Centene is outsourcing and using tax paying dollars to outsource to foreign countries and on top of that kicking Americans to the curb forcing them to go on unemployment, assistance from the states , food pantries, losing their homes, ruining their credit etc etc etc.. while the fat rats continue on collect fat paychecks paid by our tax paying dollars?

Nobody has made more public in a credible way but it seems reasonable that they’ll continue to do this. They’ve decided their problem is dead weight. They’re right, but most of it is in middle management (VP/Director level) and at the top. At the bottom are people scrambling to make everything work with inadequate resources and next to no support.

As for why they’re still hiring, NO company stops hiring during layoffs unless it is extremely small (less than 100 FTEs). It’s not actually about a work force reduction it’s about rotating out the disfavored (code named poor performers).

Write to your governors, write to your news outlets. It’s only a matter of time before the state you live in sues Centene for millions of dollars for overcharging Medicaid dr-gs. Who wants to be in business with THAT.

The way we make a difference is to hit them where it hurts….. the public, our members, these are the people who need to be made aware of what kind of company this is who truly does not care about anyone but themselves. We need to really make this go viral. Even if we go down with the ship, we are going down together !

I want to stress that “working harder” does not, and has never guaranteed anyone job security. Let’s get that out of the way.

If that were the case, Sarah London (who is not even the wealthiest Centene executive) would not be raking in millions doing next to nothing. We are talking pressing a few buttons and making a few phone calls to wire money from one place to the next.

The problem is, and will continue to be wealth hoarding and preying upon poor and needy people. You’ll never catch me defending millionaires over the people I work alongside.

If 70% employees are receiving meets expectations every year regardless of work performance- while 30% exceeds/significantly exceed are reserved for friends of people leaders, why are you stressing? Meet expectations and stop stressing yourself out. .

What state do you live in? I don’t believe this is true. You may not be able to receive severance and unemployment at the same time but you should be able to file once severance runs out.

“I’m really interested to know how much severance pay will be…

FYI some states like mine will disqualify someone from unemployment if they accept severance pay.”

@2rcs+1oNUjeJa

This is being done quietly because this corporation has no integrity and an extraordinarily broken moral compass. Not to mention they probably coerced the people already let go to keep quiet or they would lose severance. I have more respect for a company that is transparent and respects me enough to at least give me a chance to prepare. Jobs don't grow on trees and being blindsided is cr-p ...period. F-ck morale ...that's a joke - morale has never been good in this company and hasn't been for years. And working remote gives the corporation an advantage because employees cannot connect and have open discussions like they did on-site. This makes it easier for the employees to be in the dark about what is going on. Question is why do you care about producing for a company that obviously doesn't care about you on any level whatsoever?

Post ID: @2btk+1oNUjeJa

@2rcs+1oNUjeJa - laughable. that is not even close to why a major corporation keeps quiet about layoffs. 100s of employees have been ”quietly” disappearing since June, possibly including clinicians and nurses - heroes to our members. probably had to sign in blood to go quietly to get the measly severance they got. NO ONE deserves to worry - past, present or future!

Thank you for the link to NLRB. I have never been through a layoff and never had to deal with severance agreements. I, do, however read everything that requires my signature in its entirety beforehand. I wonder what the recourse is if they do try to be underhanded in the agreement.
