Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

BREAKING - Centene Poised for Layoffs Next Week, Documents Reveal

A round of layoffs at St. Louis, Mo .-based Centene is set for Oct. 2 to Oct. 5. The plans are detailed in a 13-page set of confidential HR documents entitled “Supporting December Transitions” obtained by Health Payer Specialist. The last day of work for the fired brigade will be Dec. 8, 2023, the HR documents say.

The instructions in the HR documents offer a “notification meeting script” for those due to lose their jobs, one that suggests the number of firings will be large enough to have an impact on Centene’s bottom line.

In one-on-one meetings with employees who will be fired, the HR workers are instructed to say, “Thank you for meeting with me today. Over the last 18 months Centene has been actively working on its Value Creation Plan. . . We are facing headwinds related to the [Medicaid] redetermination process and the impact of Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.”

The script continues, “that unfortunately results in the elimination of your position. Your termination date will be Dec. 8, 2023.”

In the HR documents, the targeted workers are told they have 45 days from termination to sign or refuse to sign an agreement outlining the terms of severance. Workers will get health coverage and other benefits through Dec. 31, 2023.

The HR documents also include a “save the date” notice telling the HR workers of sessions set for Sept. 27 and 28 on “managing employee reactions” to learning they are losing their jobs.

One directive in the documents says the managers will learn to recognize and deal with the signs of shock, defined as when the worker appears “quiet, tearful, sad, and unresponsive.” Another learning module will tell the managers how to deal with worker anger, seen when a soon-to-be former employee “raises voice, holds aggressive posture, becomes argumentative.”

Still others will likely be in denial, seen when the worker “appears confused, avoiding eye contact.” Far easier for the managers will be those with an air of resignation, one who “appears calm, lacking in emotion.”

The training sessions are meant to make it easier on managers as well as the employees being terminated.

The unlucky employees “will exit the organization with respect, care, and concern,” the directives promise.

Centene did not respond to requests to discuss the pending layoffs.

The moment they gave the control of the company to Sarah and Drew I saw this coming. It has bad decision after bad decisions, the crazy thing is that are making it even worse, but they are so arrogant and so drunk with the lifestyle of private jets and million dollars bonuses that were unable to here the perspective of previous Centene leaders, and other people with experience in the industry, , they don't know how run a company responsibly, so they will keep " right sizing" the workforce, with the hope margins will get better to the point it will impossible to operate. Then is when the sh-t will hit and Don't see place recovers from it.

Take your experience to a competitor that will listen and stop stressing. After they read these comments they will be sure to take notes on what not to do if they’re smart. There are some good posts here that companies can learn from. Good luck everyone!

"This is not an issue of quality. This is an issue of greed."

I disagree. I work in corporate - finance. Low star ratings really hit the company's bottom line. This is because CMS won't give us rebate if the plan has low star rating. We only can receive rebate if the plan has more than 3.5 stars. The higher the rating, the higher the percentage of the rebate, which will boost the company's net profit margin and everyone will happily receive the bonus.

Several plans have one star on member support category - customer service etc. fyi, CMS might force us to terminate the plan if the plan has lower than 3-star for 3 consecutive years.

You failed us by not listening. Leaking our survey comments to leaders so they can target employees. Now we been quiet and have to go viral. Layoffs are common blah blah, not if we been yelling for years about processes. You think we purposely failed our jobs? We been fighting daily.Culture advice from VP, you cant be serious? Culture is your front line employees. You cant wash repeat and recycle us!!!

In the Philippines, there is a mass hiring for nurses who are NCLEX passers, external consultants, what accounts is advertised on their job boards you ask?, “Centene”…
They are booting nurses out, we’re out here training our replacements. Our people leader on our team is not on our side, she’s looking out for herself, making herself look good to higher ups.
i really dont care for leaders like her. she never advocates for her team.

Pointing fingers at different areas of "low quality" is what they want us to do.

This is not an issue of quality. This is an issue of greed.

Quality improvements require boots on the ground to ensure members have access. Providers are key, you give them problems they tell members who are easy to work with. Inadequate networks require experience people to build relationships with our providers. Who is at fault? The people that executed the strategy and failed. Individual contributors are front line and can tell you exactly how to streamline the processes, but do we have a voice? No, so we lose our jobs due to poor leadership. Ask for our feedback, ask providers which plan’s they prefer and why. Now thats real business strategies but just blame employees. Insanity is doing the same thing getting same results. Whats changing besides people leaders talking in circles. This isn’t our fault. Give us an ear that will listen!!

Just look at star rating of some plans. You better fire those people who are responsible for the low rating. Hint: Operation

That meeting was a slap to the face. I don’t know how those people were able to sit at that meeting. They should be ashamed of themselves.

I heard that the Tampa office had a lot of visitors this week. How much money did they spend this week with flights, hotels, food, Disney, alcohol, and the useless meeting at the stadium? 500,000? One million? Two million?
What’s the real number of layoffs? I’m sure it’s A LOT more than 2000 employees.

There is no hiring freeze and they hire like 100-200 people a week, overtime is allowed, they have a ton of contractors, they hire a company to find ways to cut cost, they trash perfectly working equipment, they fly managers and directors from some departments yearly to have meetings that could be had via zoom, they keep closing offices, they cut the bonus from a lot of employees so that managers and above were able to keep theirs, and the solution is to lay people off.

Why do they need a private plane to travel back and forth? Why they have to rent a stadium for a meeting that looked like only 20 people were invited?

@2kmd+1oNUjeJa

How does that even make sense? We are going to fire you but you can apply for an internal position? You mean one of the 614 open positions they supposedly currently have but now there is a hiring freeze? So instead of moving people around - which they don't seem to have a problem with by making you train for jobs that they balantaly will not compensate you more for - they fire you - then expect you to go through the whole process of applying, interviewing and then waiting to be hired by the same company that just told you that you were not valuable enough to keep on to begin with? You think that's a glimmer of hope? And say you do all that - you know they will hire you for 10x's less than what you were making before they fired you.....like what? Why would you even want to work for them after that?

I don't get how a company with a 1billion dollar record setting profit in second quarter alone and this is after having a quarter million settlement lawsuit in Cali then start to talk about layoffs. If people are getting 13million dollar bonus and renting NFL stadiums to talk finances it seems like PR needs fired. They truly failed to STOP that .that was out of touch and not appropriate for a team or family when your in talks to cut family out of the company.i get we have a rough election coming up and winds of change in president and shut downs effects bottom line. I'd been in business for over 30yrs. I realize this. But this was very much not a topic management wanted to deal it. It's not being addressed or dealt with at our local level. And seems to be felt same way at Corp level too. But if it was them and it could be a few managers feelings would be different.

@2cma+1oNUjeJa my supervisor said the exact same thing in a meeting after the town hall today.

I have a gut feeling that the smaller state markets are going to be hit hard, and unfortunately for me, the 3 states my team work in ftc are small markets. I think it's all going to come down to the metrics/ cph and accuracy for who gets let go first. If the rumors are true, this is the 2nd of 4 rounds.

My supervisor did give one slight glimmer of hope today in that anyone that is laid off should be able to apply for an internal position opening as long as they are in good standing with the company.

So meeting today starts with her and that doctor making it all of our faults for the lay offs due to poor quality and poor teamwork. Numbers sure seemed good before she got involved.
She is so self centered, and incompetent she wants to lecture people in things she knows nothing about. Health care professionals are the most adept in team work and quality. She’s never had to keep anyone alive.
And that fool that said we are all a family and they would have people help write resumes and help with interview questions? WTF. Do not talk to us all like we are stupid. We are all well educated and experienced professionals. I’ve never seen people who are so blatant in their disregard for people.
It’s ludicrous for them to hold a meeting about how great the future is while talking to the ones getting let go and still make everyone wait for days.

I don’t think they’re given a list. I think they’re given a number and then your direct sups have to make to decision.

My supervisor said she has not been given a list, they have no idea who is being laid off next week and from the sounds of it, they’re also on the chopping block. So my question is how do they decide who goes? Our manager and director have been here for less than 6months!! What do they know about running our department? Such BS!

Why was the chat disabled during the meeting? Afraid they may actually have to answer real questions and be held accountable? The meeting was a big joke and a slap in the face. Now we have to wait the weekend to find out if we still have jobs. Let me utilize my therapist while I still have health insurance.

You’ll get an invite from your leader. Or HR. In the past it has been a 1:1 and then HR joins the call. It used to be a random request to chat in a leaders office.

That was when they had the element of surprise. That’s gone now, so they will likely be more swift and direct.

They’ll be looking for people who have all sorts of reasons to dodge the meeting. That won’t change or delay the outcome. You’ll be told in some fashion in that day whether you accept a meeting invite or not.

Why is our quality so bad you ask??? Because we have people in third world countries that are paid per case completed and they have to do it at lightning speed in order for them to also make a living which leaves room for all the errors. On top of the fact that they have access to all of our members PHI. Do we all not remember where a lot of scams originate from ??? Come on …. This is a disgrace to our members where we are leaving them open to possible identity theft.

So much talk about the members and culture and the excitement that the future bring. All that BS coming out of Centene leader mouths. Those member will not loose their Medicaid and will be fine. But Centene management show their true colors today. They don’t give a sh!t about their employees, the one who depend on their check to support their family, and keep this company running. That townhall meeting show us how much we matter. Laughing and making stupid joke while 68,000 employees are wondering whether or not they are part of that 2000 plus that not going to have a job by December.
