Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

BREAKING - Centene Poised for Layoffs Next Week, Documents Reveal

A round of layoffs at St. Louis, Mo .-based Centene is set for Oct. 2 to Oct. 5. The plans are detailed in a 13-page set of confidential HR documents entitled “Supporting December Transitions” obtained by Health Payer Specialist. The last day of work for the fired brigade will be Dec. 8, 2023, the HR documents say.

The instructions in the HR documents offer a “notification meeting script” for those due to lose their jobs, one that suggests the number of firings will be large enough to have an impact on Centene’s bottom line.

In one-on-one meetings with employees who will be fired, the HR workers are instructed to say, “Thank you for meeting with me today. Over the last 18 months Centene has been actively working on its Value Creation Plan. . . We are facing headwinds related to the [Medicaid] redetermination process and the impact of Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.”

The script continues, “that unfortunately results in the elimination of your position. Your termination date will be Dec. 8, 2023.”

In the HR documents, the targeted workers are told they have 45 days from termination to sign or refuse to sign an agreement outlining the terms of severance. Workers will get health coverage and other benefits through Dec. 31, 2023.

The HR documents also include a “save the date” notice telling the HR workers of sessions set for Sept. 27 and 28 on “managing employee reactions” to learning they are losing their jobs.

One directive in the documents says the managers will learn to recognize and deal with the signs of shock, defined as when the worker appears “quiet, tearful, sad, and unresponsive.” Another learning module will tell the managers how to deal with worker anger, seen when a soon-to-be former employee “raises voice, holds aggressive posture, becomes argumentative.”

Still others will likely be in denial, seen when the worker “appears confused, avoiding eye contact.” Far easier for the managers will be those with an air of resignation, one who “appears calm, lacking in emotion.”

The training sessions are meant to make it easier on managers as well as the employees being terminated.

The unlucky employees “will exit the organization with respect, care, and concern,” the directives promise.

Centene did not respond to requests to discuss the pending layoffs.

Sarah definitely sounds like a poet right now. More gloating and platitudes that don't answer many questions.

Yeah no - that's all I can say. I am so over the two faced gaslighting not just with Centene but in every aspect of life.

Reply to Lrpf+1oNUjeJa about severance... you will get your email the day AFTER your last work date. I.e, last physical date of work was 10.6 but separation date was 10.13, email arrived on 10.14. Be absolutely certain to go to workday and change your contact info to your personal email. After signing and returning my letter on the 14th, my severance pay came Nov 10. Hope this helps. You will not get your severance on your final paycheck. Expect 2 pay cycles AFTER your last paycheck.

Anyone else PI---D that 2000 of us are losing our jobs, but Centene can afford to send their SLBDI fellows to St. Louis AND get them rooms in the ultra luxurious RITZ-CARLTON hotel (rooms are over $500/night)?? Maybe they need to start making better financial decisions...

To the person who mentioned no receiving your SEVERANCE. I understand you’re upset. This su-ks.

Can you help the ones from the most recent round of layoff set expectations for receiving their money by providing more details while remaining anonymous? For example:

If your last day was the 10/6 (date a lot of August people said was their last day), did you receive the letter to sign on Saturday, 10/7 or Monday, 10/9?

How many days AFTER receiving the severance letter, did you sign and return it?

EBOS had its quarterly townhall yesterday. There was a question about more layoffs. Nothing confirmed but the amount of pauses from the speaker (assuming that she knew more are coming but can't say anything) was telling.

Seems to me that the left hand doesn't know what the right is doing. Some of the comments that stood out were "workload reduction in 2024 but an expected increase in 2025" and "we want to get aduquate staffing levels on all teams so we do not have to move colleagues to other markets for push/ burn down days."

Um, you're going to accomplish that by firing 2,000 people that could work these other markets? Somebody please make it make sense.

In regard to the town hall, if it’s quarterly then they may be doing it in November due to so many folks being out in December for the holidays. In regard to reorganization, can confirm it’s happening in shared services. We’ve already been notified of the new org structure that goes into effect in January.

Sorry to hear severance is not being paid out. Looks like they are operating like a failing business that barely keeps its lights on. Next they will be asking us to work for free to help out.

DO NOT expect your severance to come in a timely fashion. I was in the first round, still have not received it and they will not give any answers as to when. HR says they aren't given that information, the contact given for the severance information also says they don't know. Just letting you know. They DO NOT care if you have families, bills or COBRA... so disheartening to give so many years of care to recieve 0 back !!!

I totally understand not feeling charitable under the Centene name. But the United Way is a great not for profit organization that supports many local charities that are more than likely about to help those who've recently been laid off. If you can contribute, make a donation of your own accord outside of Centene so they can't get the bragging rights but still support those in need.

Now Centene wants you to take more of your money and donate it to United Way.
Fooock them. Maybe Sarah London can donate most of her $15mill salary? Incompetent, glutenous, pig.
Do what your job title says. Nothing more.

Stop whining. Take some responsibility if you actually thought Centene, Sarah L., your PL's and managers were great people and thought they look at you as family, you are crazy. You are a worker. Your co workers and your PL's are just that--co-workers. They don't care about you. For those of is still here, do the bare minimum. Nothing more, nothing less. Your paycheck is a dr-g and Centene is your dr-g dealer. Have some dignity and get grow a backbone.

They are letting people go now if they don't like you.My friend said she was told that everyone who was let go was going now, they arent waiting. I asjed someone else who stated that only 2 have been let go..they say it is a lay off not true they are terminated the job....., Here is the thing if you don't Kiss their backside or be Yes person then they will do everything in their power to get you out. Tenure people, older than 50 years of age and anyone who has ysed medical leave.

Please don’t insult us by saying age had nothing to do with it, I know top performers per performance reviews that were all over the age of 60 that were cut. Then you dangle the severance carrot but only if you sign a release that you won’t sue because we all know you were let go because of age. Please don’t insult our intelligence.

10/6 was my last day and it feels pretty good. No longer having to pretend to support a company that robs the government by pretending to care about the poor and elderly. No longer having to toe the line on the whole “Centene way.” I’ve been laid off before but this one is the absolute worse, I was told to continue to look internally for a job, I had an internal job and it was eliminated. How can you still be hiring people from the outside and firing thousands of internals. These, some of them are high performers.

Not to scare everyone more but typically these Town Halls are held quarterly. Now we’ve got another one 1.5 months after our last? Seems fishy.

Layoffs in December are the worst. I know all the execs got in a room and were told to back off the whip cracking, do what can be done, pretend the herd will not be culled more and squeeze whatever can be squeezed out of the traumatized work force. I have so many people tell me they are physically ill dreading the work day. This was and continues to be a lack of leadership. At the same time having professional growth path meetings to tell them they can progress from a janitor 1 to a janitor 2 some day. What a cruel joke!

Layoffs also have bitten into Centene with a known layoff of 2,000 this summer, plus another unannounced layoff terminating staff in December, according to this Editor’s source.

Is this another leak?

But checks are not issues until the letter is signed and received correct? The 45 day window is optional…or a required waiting period? What’s to stop someone from rescinding on agreement after check is received?

I assume for the above reason that even if agreement is signed the day it’s made available, the 7 days is required to avoid this.

The below comment is an example of why all leaders should have stuck to the prepared scripts. All the ones that changed the wording missed important things.

If I remember correctly you can’t get your letter until after you work your last day, then you have up to 45 days to sign it with a 7 day window to rescind your agreement after you sign it.

“Has anyone affected had any light shed on specifics of severance package? We are being told that, “per HR”, it could be well into January before severance pay is paid. At the very earliest, 12/22. This would have been nice to know 4 weeks ago. Everyone I’ve come into contact with was under the impression it would be paid 12/8.

‘Sorry kids, Christmas is late this year so the suits can kick us one more time while they can.’l
