Thread regarding Centene Corp. layoffs

BREAKING - Centene Poised for Layoffs Next Week, Documents Reveal

A round of layoffs at St. Louis, Mo .-based Centene is set for Oct. 2 to Oct. 5. The plans are detailed in a 13-page set of confidential HR documents entitled “Supporting December Transitions” obtained by Health Payer Specialist. The last day of work for the fired brigade will be Dec. 8, 2023, the HR documents say.

The instructions in the HR documents offer a “notification meeting script” for those due to lose their jobs, one that suggests the number of firings will be large enough to have an impact on Centene’s bottom line.

In one-on-one meetings with employees who will be fired, the HR workers are instructed to say, “Thank you for meeting with me today. Over the last 18 months Centene has been actively working on its Value Creation Plan. . . We are facing headwinds related to the [Medicaid] redetermination process and the impact of Medicare Advantage Star Ratings.”

The script continues, “that unfortunately results in the elimination of your position. Your termination date will be Dec. 8, 2023.”

In the HR documents, the targeted workers are told they have 45 days from termination to sign or refuse to sign an agreement outlining the terms of severance. Workers will get health coverage and other benefits through Dec. 31, 2023.

The HR documents also include a “save the date” notice telling the HR workers of sessions set for Sept. 27 and 28 on “managing employee reactions” to learning they are losing their jobs.

One directive in the documents says the managers will learn to recognize and deal with the signs of shock, defined as when the worker appears “quiet, tearful, sad, and unresponsive.” Another learning module will tell the managers how to deal with worker anger, seen when a soon-to-be former employee “raises voice, holds aggressive posture, becomes argumentative.”

Still others will likely be in denial, seen when the worker “appears confused, avoiding eye contact.” Far easier for the managers will be those with an air of resignation, one who “appears calm, lacking in emotion.”

The training sessions are meant to make it easier on managers as well as the employees being terminated.

The unlucky employees “will exit the organization with respect, care, and concern,” the directives promise.

Centene did not respond to requests to discuss the pending layoffs.

For those responding to the WARN comments -

Note that they can offer you 8 weeks severance which you receive after termination. Everyone is asking if they get paid for the 60 days notice - yes you get paid because you are still working until your end date 60 days later. This is why they have layoffs starting Oct 1st and the last physical day of employment being Dec 8th. You DO not get another additional 60 days on top of that.

The meeting will me labeled “Checking in, please prioritize.” That’s how the August layoffs were labeled anyhow.

If anyone has seen the severance paperwork, is there a non- compete clause? Cigna has a bunch of remote openings on Indeed right now but I don't want to waste my time going through the application/interview process if the non-compete clause is in the Centene legalese.

Food for thought:

The WARN Act applies to all publicly and privately held companies. The WARN Act applies to all organizations that are for-profit or not-for-profit. A WARN notice must be given if there is a plant closing or a mass layoff.

An employer that provides adequate notice required by the WARN Act may offer an employee two months of severance pay in a severance package. In these instances, employers are often hoping that the employee will accept the two months of payment in exchange for agreeing not to sue them for employment violations

The law makes no provision for any alternative such as pay in place of a notice. While an employer who pays workers for 60 calendar days instead of giving them proper notice technically has violated WARN, the provision of pay and benefits in place of a notice is a possible option

If you received something of value (such as additional pay or benefits) for signing the waiver and you signed the waiver voluntarily and knowingly, you may have waived any claims you have under WARN or other employ- ment-related laws

Not sure if it happens on Monday, but we may get some meeting invites that dont appear obvious. This comment section will be flooded this week. Good luck on job searches, or good luck staying if you’re not on this list.

Centene had 74,500 employees in December 2022. As of July 2023 they were reported to have reduced that number by 9,500 down to 65,000.

Statement of Operations: Three Months Ended June 30, 2023

For the second quarter of 2023, premium and service revenues increased 3% to $34.8 billion from $34.0 billion in the comparable period of 2022.

For those of you who were recently laid off, what was the title of the meeting invite?

Did you receive the meeting invite within minutes of the meeting start time?

Screenshot. Everything. I have countless records of my teammates and I asking for additional training/help just to be told things like “this is just how we do it here” “try your best”. They set us up to fail and keep us small.

Write to your local news outlets and journalists and keep doing it. Someone is bound to pick this up.

This is pure, unadulterated testimony from Centene employees. This should be at the top of Google when you search the company.

Do you think for one minute they want ppl to know their job? NOOOO, if they wanted 100 percent they would invest in training, correct? It’s a fly by the seat of your pants learning, right? If we knew our jobs the way we should it would cost them money , claims would be paid correctly, etc etc etc. THEY wouldn’t be able to steal for years, like they did and would have continued to do so if they wasn’t busted. So the ones that know the job, give 100 percent, worked three jobs for one pay.. you’ll be let go because you are doing everything right and they don’t want that. Anyway who wants to stay with a company so shady , who would lay ppl off during a recession and right before the holidays? Fu---d up at every level!!!!!

Wonder if they’re going off last years end of year performances?

Even if - and thats a very strong IF - they had legit reasons to layoff so many people, I highly doubt they bothered to take the time to review 66,000 employees performances from last year or any year to make a decision on who to let go. And since they have refused to communicate with us we will never know what metric if any was used at all. Given the intentional attempt to hide the layoff and the fact they didn't report it to the EDD to be put on the Warn List like they did in 2020 and 2021 speaks volumes as to this CEO and her motivations.

The e-learnings would be found by going into Centene University and accessing your assigned learnings....

Would the e-learning be sent by email? I would think it would be sent to employees that are safe. It’ll affect even the safe ones to lose people they’ve formed bonds with.

I will say that I am in claims and some upcoming trainings of mine got cancelled, and my PL bailed on our 1x1 Friday. It could just be that they’re also just stressed and had a lot going on but it certainly didn’t give meeeeee any peace of mind.

I’m a high producer, but was given very inadequate training across the board. Ive been assigned the same work for over a year, after Centene acquired the company I was working for. Through no fault of my own, I’m not skilled here. It’s hard not to feel like I’m apart of “the fat being trimmed”, so to speak. My team and I have all been told for the last year there’s no current place to advance from our positions. It’s hard not to feel like I’ve been set up to fail. I’ve been at this for 4 years, and really felt excited for the future until I was made a Centene employee last year.

Best of luck to all of us. Fu-k Centene.

I ain't gonna work on Maggie's Farm, no more
No, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's Farm, no more
Well, I wake up in the morning, fold my hands, and pray for rain
I got a head full of ideas, that are drivin' me insane
It's a shame, the way she makes me
Scrub the floor
I ain't gonna work on, nah
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's Farm, no more
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother, no more
Nah, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother, no more
Well, he hands you a nickel, and he hands you a dime
And he asks you with a grin, if you're havin' a good time
Then he fines you every time
You slam the door
I ain't gonna work for, nah
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's brother, no more
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa, no more
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa, no more
Well, he puts his cigar out in your face just for kicks
His bedroom window it is made out of bricks
The National Guard
Stands around his door
I ain't gonna work for, nah
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's pa, no more
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma, no more
No, I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma, no more
Well, she talks to all the servants about man and God and law
And everybody says, she's the brains behind pa
She's 68, but she says she's 24
I ain't gonna work for, nah
I ain't gonna work for Maggie's ma, no more
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm, no more
No, I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm, no more
Well, I try my best to be just like I am
But everybody wants you to be just like them
They sing while they slave
And they just get bored
I ain't gonna work on, nah
I ain't gonna work on Maggie's farm, no more

For them to be more connected to reality, meet with employees on zoom/teams and allow chat questions. I think some employees have good insight. Quit meeting with only People Leaders and show your front line respect. Just listen. Theres no reason this many employees should have to post to get your attention. Meet with them, we should not feel disposable without giving our feedback.

Well first I’m not Centene, second I son’t belong to any bourgeois fake political party.

Talk about thinking you know someone.

I certainly am tired of the “This wasn’t so bad until it happened to MEEEEEEEE!!!” mindset that’s ki-ling us all, though. Maybe you’ll find your way past that through this. I’ll hold my breath.

I wonder why CEO’s don’t meet with individual contributors. There have been many success stories of CEOs meeting with actual employees to improve productivity and processes. Honestly, I don’t think most VP’s know their team members names or duties to determine who to lay off. I have only seen management meetings that don’t give a whole picture, most are just delegators that have no ideas if the project rolls out will reach the unrealistic goals. Honestly this is the first health care company that I have worked for that works in silos, there’s no respect to ever meet with individual contributions. Btw this is my 10 year experience, if yours differ, you’re lucky.

Whoever said that the executive plan is to offshore as much of Medicare Product as possible… that’s pretty interesting. It would mesh with the nonsense that I’ve been seeing on the ground.

I will say that what little of MP has been offshored already is barely functioning and takes 4-5x as much onshore work to fill the gaps of than it would otherwise, so godspeed and good luck to them if that is truly the plan.

The amount of labor that’s been burned up in my area just to barely keep the work done to a bare minimum standard in the absence of appropriate resources and tools… they’re gonna magnify that exponentially if their plan really is to offshore even more functionality.

Assuming it’s true, whoever came up with that idea is either not listening to a single soul on the ground, or senior leadership on the ground is afraid to tell them the truth.

Good grief.

I miss WellCare. The only reward you get for quality hard work at Centene is more work. I’ve been held to double the production standards WellCare required and expected to to literally have 100% quality. You don’t get quantity and quality . You have to pick one. WellCare was more focused on quality than quantity which is exactly why the Medicare star rating was lower than it ever has been last year. The amount of times I’ve cried and had breakdowns in the past 3 years is unreal. This layoff would be a blessing to my entire dept.
