Thread regarding HCSC (Health Care Service Corporation) layoffs

CEO and Upper Management are Stooges

Our CEO and upper management are utterly clueless when it comes to running the company. The townhall was a farce. Maurice could barely speak coherently and could not even address the email sent out in his name regarding work from home, nevermind the questions he could not address that are really facing the company, such as AI. He said he needed to learn and "circle back" on real issues.

The board makes the big decisions for HCSC, that is clear. The others in upper management lead the messaging and apparently do not even consult Maurice.

He is a figurehead getting kudos because of his ethnicity. It is really pathetic...but it is what it is.

The board has more changes coming and they will attempt to vocalize the message. Amazingly, though, they encourage us to vote for Maurice to be most influential in Heal Care Industry. What a farce this is!
He will be gone as a puppet in the next recession... coming soon. Gone by October 2024 is my prediction.

@EIP Good luck with the 'fewer meetings' strategy 😂 I've found that each division and management chain has it's own approach/cadence to meeting frequency and I don't see that changing.

I disagree on the the EIP comments. We just rolled out a huge change outlining an approach to schedule less meetings and have less people attend meetings which will save the HCSC multi millions. Big picture stuff that only the likes of McKinsey partnering with at least 3 strategy directors could have cooked up. Brilliant!

Strategy is a strategy. Heavily educated and internationally diverse. The individuals ask questions and then they give you their answer. A complete joke…. A lot of self serving individuals. A waste of money. When will leadership figure this out? No value, no value. Big joke!

Agree with the last poster. True stooges are in corporate strategy and are enabling our esteemed vice lord chairs' terrible decision making. I was on a EIP call last week with 3 contractors hired by strategy and no one from blue but me (2 people from strategy were a no show for some reason). Seems the tale is wagging the dog.

The comment about the strategy people is on point. The demands from that group are causing upset and drama everywhere. What are the results? Seems like a massive ego fest, and they are getting away with it, while everyone doing work in the investment plan projects is exhausted, anxious and wondering why they are working themselves to death over this leader’s desire for attention. It makes no sense that people are being pushed so hard for the wrong reasons. It sure isn’t to actually help customers.

The lackluster strategy of this company has gotten out of hand. I have never seen such a top heavy strategy group in my time here with so little industry experience and lack of knowhow and yet making so so many big decisions. Heard from a close source (VP level) that most senior leaders are NOT happy with large/never ending staffing invest in corp strategy group and lack of progress. luckily i am very close to retiring or just leaving as I have 20 years of sweet pension in the bank!!! Good luck to those who can stick with it. I think much rougher seas await unless changes are made.

It's shameful that people would try to take away a black man's achievements and educational accomplishments. He earned that doctorate and trying to anonymously discount it on a site like this without proof is very vicious and beneath us all as human beings. The proof is hanging on the wall in his office. Can't we all try to see the humanity in others and celebrate their achievements? Come together HCSC, be best!

Well of course the current leadership are stooges of the board. That is common knowledge.

Also, yes Maurice, not a Doctor...LOL, is the head puppet put as a face for political correctness. They are all getting very rich from this arrangement though, so expect more of the same until it is no longer profitable and new management is brought in to continue the money machine...or we merge with another Blues pla and they get even wealthier.

Just play the game along with them. Life is good right now!

Maurice Smith has worked here for 32 years. HCSC is the largest it’s ever been. Like politics in this country, white is right. Brown has to sit down.

Doctored his way to the top😏

Sorry, that was an underhanded joke. I’ll stop reading posts from here and just get to work at HCSC.

Maurice Smith isn’t a medical doctor nor does he have his PhD. Wanted to clear that up.

Does a company that contributed $1,500,000,0000 to reserves in 2022 really deserve to be called a utterly clueless? This is directly in line with similar carriers on a per insured basis.

I am actively wondering if the OP was as concerned by the white openly corrupt HCSC CEO David Lesar or if he saves his concern only for non white CEOs.

The horrible management team at HCSC is the result of 20 years of nepotism, favoritism, and racism. So many POC were passed over for promotion and/or recognition during this period. One year of DEI and the racists at HCSC are bent out of shape.

If you don't like what's happening at HCSC, then leave and go to that mythical company that has no DEI and everything is so great.

Reading comprehension is clearly not your forte. How do you get ‘dog whistle’ out of that, except you are unable to break out of your echo chamber and view everything through the shallow lens of your white savior complex. Turn off the TV and try employing critical thinking skills and understand what is being said.

Leave it to the Red Hats to throw out coded dog whistle words in their posts like 'slaves.' The racial tension between our diverse Chicago Leadership and the people in our 4 hillbilly States is palpable. Just accept the domination, just like you did when you lost the civil war.

Fact 1: People are showing their prejudice, not racism. Do any of you even know what racism means? LOL

Fact 2: CEO is always the figure head, but the board runs things. Nothing new. Race has nothing to do with it, although it says a lot to put a Black male in that position, so let’s not discredit that - should be celebrated.

Fact 3: CEOs rarely last long more than 5 years here. I think Ray McCaskey was the last long standing CEO. So, change will happen and things will move on as they have. It’s corporate and what you signed up for, unless some of you are slaves

Fact 4: Forget WFH full-time. Those days are gone. Get over it already.

You can tell when a non person of color mentions that Maurice’s race is over used. Welcome to America. It’s a fact that he is a black male. It’s a fact that black men are rarely in leadership roles in Corporate America. Barack Obama was the first black president. IT’s mentioned, because it’s an unusual act. They don’t call Lebrun a black all star because it’s a norm. This is just my view. But like sports, winning is a fact by numbers. The high scores beat the low scores. If HCSC has grown its revenue yr/yr and the membership has increased yr/yr, why do we keep saying this leader is weak. Go read Anthems board, go and read united board, here on layoffs.com. Maurice has issued a 3/2 office to home flex. Did that make him week? Should you been able to work from home 5 days. 45k combined employees, will have a lot of different views and ideology about leadership. By the mere fact that over 40% of America would vote for Trump tells me everything I need to know about America. Race matters. It always has and always will. If a black man dated your daughter, your sister or your niece, how would you describe that man to your best friend. Would you mention his race, let’s me know why race matters to some and does not matter for some. Think about it!.

First, the board of directors are Maurice’s boss. Just like the person I hope you are trying to earn a 5 from. He is the boss of 25k blue badges and 20k green badges and as soon as he stop bossing, someone else will step in and boss. The company is the largest in number of employees and revenue than it has ever been. He makes the big bucks, because he is the boss.

How he talks? Really, this man paid every one during the pandemic. Gave cash quarterly for all kind of corky stuff. When HCSC stops making money, then his a-s gotta go. But for right now, he the head HNIC.

You can leave and go see what the other companies in Healthcare are doing. Layoffsss.

Not sure why the cries of racism here. White people can and have been stooges for the board. Maurice is now as well and is completely neutered of true leadership. They also do play up his race too, which is racist in itself.

"He is a figurehead getting kudos because of his ethnicity"

So only non-white leaders can be stooges for the board? Be better.

It’s not about race. You could tell by how he talks during town hall meetings. He’s not a good leader.

I’m glad he stopped asking about favorite candies and sports teams. We don’t care. Talk to us about important things.

So you are proposing a white CEO would not be used/manipulated and that this is happening to Maurice because he is black and easy to use/manipulate? Yep. still sounds like racism.

Most people I have talked to privately agree with the sentiment of this post. It is not racist to tell the truth about the situation as well. I also agree Maurice is getting very rich from this charade and does not care. He will ride the gravyvtrain as long as he can.

Post ID: @2gwg+1oCn59wn

For the commenters suggesting racism, it IS possible for a black person to be used/manipulated to fit a company’s preferred narrative. Don’t be naive — Maurice is being used because he can be controlled. He’s NOT a good leader and he is a horrible speaker. He probably doesn’t give a cr-p since he’s making millions.
