Why do you work at 3M?

Curious why folks still work here? Why not go somewhere else? Thanks!

I celebrated my 25 year service anniversary this past June, a good milestone to have under my belt since I was one of the 1,100 job eliminated this past Spring, being told late April after the Q1 Earnings Call, with our 'separation date' from 3M being June 30th.

I've always had good managers and great co-workers, for most of my career. I've had at least 4 different roles/jobs during my time at 3M, allowing me to grow as a person and enhance my skills. It's not been the best, the past 5 years or so, but I hung on, out of loyalty -- and I get/got a pension. I was hurt, to be let go, but as a company we are WAAY past the point of choosing who is let go based on work ethic, past contributions, or even the role we have at 3M. You are either in 'the right place, at the right time -- or the wrong place, at the wrong time." These cuts are widespread and massive now. I could have used a few more years to pull the trigger myself on 'retiring' but I'm grateful for the pension I will get, and the generous severance package. I'm too young to actually retire and will look early next year for work -- a 'fun' job, no more Corporate!!

I'm at the tail end of the "Baby Boomers" where the thinking was, you work hard and hope it gets recognized, sadly that is not the case, you must always advocate for yourself and have self-respect - know when to cut your losses and move on. I'm glad my days in the workforce are nearing the end, I don't know how the younger folk manage to earn a decent living and raise a family today, God Bless you all.

I honestly don’t know. I keep getting pressure to work constantly and they have unrealistic expectations for what one person can actually do in a day. Also making far less than everyone else in the group. Why am I putting in all of this effort when I get half of what everyone else gets? I should leave, but I have many dependents and the WFH allows me to see my family much more. When you’re in a constant state of “I should really be working” when you’re spending time with family…that’s not good. Daily I have to remind myself: this is only a job, we’re shutting down the computer, go do something fun. I have actually said out loud to myself “stop thinking about work”. Either the environment of perpetual overwork needs to change in the next month (unlikely with Spin, which is where I am) or I need to start looking for a new job.

It's true. Just saw an email from the SVP of planning. He asked all countries to roll down the sales with the impending slow down of China. Looks like a bloody Q3 and Q4. Don't be surprised when 3M adjust its EPS downward again in the next quarterly earning.

You have been warned. Sell your shares below it never sees $100 again.

Agree with previous poster. Let the SVP/VP/director work their a.s.s. Worth. They are paid super well and let them worry about the KPIs

Workers are fed up working to attain goals for millionaires and billionaires who have absolutely no interest in the average employee; therefore, "I don't care" is the perfect slogan for anyone who works for someone else.

When it comes time to let me go, you do not blink. Well, I do not blink at your losses. I'll stay until the end and take everything I can get.

The money, and the amount of Vacation I have accured. If it wasn't for the vacation I would start over somewhere new in a heartbeat.

It has been a double-edged sword for me. At the end of the day, I am tired and burnt out and struggle to concentrate and carve out time to update my resume and apply to positions and go through interviews. This is all my own fault, and perhaps simply means I haven't found my limit. I also keep thinking I can help and make a difference for my co-workers, and always have thoughts of guilt of what me leaving might do to them. I love my co-workers and keep convincing myself there will be better timing. Then the years go bye.

I do not care about mission statements or profit margins. The only thing I care about is me, myself, and I.

At the end of the day, if you don’t care about yourself, nobody else is going to.

3M management certainly does not care about its employees.

Like someone else said, 165k plus AIP. Still building toward Port 1 pension. WFH. Get to take an afternoon nap. Never miss showcase on price is right. Micromanaging boss is stretched thin so only have to put up with an hour or two of that garbage per month. Building 401k up. Good coworkers.

But this is NOT the company I hired into in the 80s when people were the most important asset. That died 20 years ago under mcnerney. 3M needs the person who resurrected GE but using non GE tactics. That's the only hope.

I'm attempting to but there must be obvious reasons that I'm having a difficult time. I can't find equal pay and benefits. 3M does seem to do a great job of staying ahead of other companies in the same line of work. I've got 20 years with 3M so Manufacturing is my primary background. It's also hard to leave the vacation I've built up with my seniority. If it wasn't for the lack of job security, constant pressure from above, and declining culture and work ethics, 3M would be a great place to work. Almost like the 3M I started with. Long story short, I'm trying.

It's a paycheck that pay's the bills. Absolutely nothing else. All the good quality and small perks about 3M are mostly to completely gone.

Because I haven't landed another job yet (I work in a very niche field and openings don’t come up very often). I am in talks with a potential new employer right now.

It is unfortunate that I feel the need to leave. I enjoy the work that I do on a day to day basis, and really love my customers and most of my colleagues. I am planning on leaving due to toxic work environment perpetuated by my supervisor and her flying monkey that HR has done literally nothing about. Also this is the first job I have EVER had where my hard work often goes unrecognized by my superiors. My job requires me to be doing things that are considered 1-2 levels above me on the T-scale. Not getting recognized (financially) is a huge morale ki-ler. I am starting to refuse to do the things that are above and beyond because it doesn’t seem to matter…

I want to leave but I am not young. Age discrimination is real and it is hard to find another job. I cannot leave MN for family reasons which makes finding a job even harder. I am also struggling with health challenges as a result of workplace harassment while at 3M.

Yeah. why would I leave when I am making about $180k, portfolios 1 pension plan, can WFH and very much doing nothing.
PG changed us to BSC which makes us less work to do.
I hope 3M will keep pension in 5 more yrs so I can get a bridge.

I am in a Director level position and I bring in about $300 k per year. I have zero direct reports and I am supposed to commercialize a product which has been in development phase for many many years.

My primary job is to make pretty Power Point slides and meet with customers and tell them how cool this new technology is!

Is there another company in the world which is as good !!! Why leave eh ??

Value of stock and stock options make it hardly worth it young or older when just living on the salary portion with minimal raises to cover higher cost of living. If I was young, I would find a good start up and take the risk on the growth opportunity.

I am in my early 50, and worked long in 3M. I am staying till the retirement package. Work load is quite sparse and I can work from home. That’s keeping me here.

My question is why are people joining 3M? I know of someone who just took a job with the new Healthcare business. If you do not have a job I can see why you would join 3M. But, why would you leave a job to join 3M? Even though Healthcare will be separate from Remainco the culture at HC will likely be as toxic as our current culture and there will be significant “bumps in the road” with a new company, including extremely tight budgets.

I still identify myself with our products and care for my customers.
The salary is good and I have some good coworkers that I consider my friends.
However, seeing how upper management is taking decisions without keeping the customer in focus, makes me sick.
We urgently need to get back to our strength and deliver value to our customers. And this starts with innovation, good relationship between reps and customers and superior AE support.

The area I'm in has been safe the last few years, I make good money, enjoy what I do, and I have a really awesome team of direct reports (and my coworkers are generally good too). Simple as that. Makes it hard to think about leaving, plus I am a nervous interviewer so I don't look forward to that lol

I recently left. There was a sense of community and friends at 3M, and it was hard for me to leave. However I will say that now that I have left, it feels good. The culture you get used to working in isn’t always the best one there is…. It’s just familiar. If you are willing to leave and change it can be good (or bad sometimes). In my case leaving 3M has been a good thing. I really should have done it sooner.
