Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Got my RTO letter

Basically says , I have to relocate to Dallas before end of the year. Severance offer will be sent “ sometime in the near future”. Basically being held hostage. BAU

Remember - there are a ton of folks that can just retire. Just like the HC changes forced people to stay or retire.

Tell them you need everything before you can make a decision. Thanks for the notice and put in writing, cc’g your attorney requesting a full contract offer before you will consider an informal hearsay notice. Threaten then that if a formal contract is not presented within 5 days, the notification will be considered an infringement of AT&T severance policy. AT&T legal obligation is to honor AT&T severance entitlement if moved over 50 miles. Your expectation of such notification shall disclose your years of severance & severance amount if you determine not to move to “such address “ your severance entitlement payment of $$$ severance pay with an off payroll on xx/xx/xxxx.

OP - what you described is how I understand the process is for ATS.

Why paraphrase, post the contents of the letter. There’s nothing in there that is identifiable, and we will all most likely be receiving the same letter just with a different location.

OP here. Located in SE right now but not willing to move to Dallas. My problem is, how do I start posting for jobs without knowing when this severance offer comes out .. could be tomorrow , could be in a couple of months. Hostage …

↓↓↓ Unless that first mention was a response that didn't use quotations. WTH knows. I did hear that some CSO jobs might go to Bedminster or Middletown. Nothing about that recent, though, and didn't address hub issue.

OP that stinks. Still waiting on our notifications, but I’m pretty sure it will be Atlanta for us.

Wishful thinking, but would be good if everyone declined moving. They aren’t expecting that. They would be crushed and have to rethink the whole thing just like they did last time Stank tried to force people to move.

Best thing to do imho if you don’t plan on moving, tell them no I don’t plan to move, take the severance, apply and interview for other jobs while you wait for your last day, if you get an offer and have to start before your last day, take the offer, if you’re lucky enough and can have your new job start date after your last day at ATT even better. But that’s what you should do, don’t just quit. Keep that paycheck going and use your time on the clock to apply to other jobs, do the bare min.

Letter received. I must relocate to Bedminster NJ AND OMG I’m going to quit. I have a wife and kid in HS - I am not moving.

Was this comment removed?

Bedminster NJ doesn’t even have a viable office yet. They’re still working out of the old building which is due to be vacated. The new location is not ready and can’t support the number of employees that are assigned there now.

“will make you move over and over until the break your spirit”

This isn’t true at all. T is drastically consolidating their locations for efficiency.

Congratulations on being given the choice to move. A lot of recent surplus employees would have liked to have had that opportunity.

Who sent the letter? Was it done in email?

"I’m going to quit. I have a wife and kid in HS - I am not moving."

Why would you quit if your date is this year? Decline the move and get severance. If your target date is further out than this year, there is no deadline yet, so yes, then you could just start looking for another job; in that case, no sense hanging around just for the severance, unless you want to gamble that they'll rescind the whole thing.

Out of curiosity, what area of the country are you in now? You don't have to be super specific, just maybe Southeast, California, etc.

I don't like the sound of that, but it maybe ok. There seems to be a lot of confusion between what a "letter" actually is. Is it just a first notification that lets you know this will be happening, or are they asking you to reply with a yes or no to their relocation demand?

If they're asking for an answer without severance details, I'd be very worried. But I'm also starting to wonder if this is actually a process. I was asked by a supervisor a couple of weeks ago if I would move, and I said it was unlikely, but I wanted to see what the actual options are. A couple of weeks later, I simply got surplussed. I never had to officially provide an answer. May just be a coincidence, or maybe that conversation was actually me giving them an answer, but it didn't feel like it at the time.

Almost feels like they're trying to keep the pressure on in hopes that some people will just quit.
