Thread regarding Charles Schwab Corp. layoffs

Why no news coverage?

Aside from an RIABiz article, there's no news coverage of RTO. Most other big companies got lots of coverage - recently with AT&T the New York Post among others covered it; Microsoft was covered by CNBC mong others; Amazon was covered by the New York Times and Fortune.

All were similarly hated policies but much better communicated (the EC has been cowards on this one compared to leadership at those other companies).

Yet for Schwab it is a media blackout...

Calm down. It’s still allowing 40% of time as remote to work at a great company plus four weeks a year. It may not be that bad and hybrid may be healthier for many.

It’s just another company among many on the RTO train. Not newsworthy. RIABiz is basically a blog about Schwab so ofc they will cover the topic. They also failed to cover the other side of that coin.

‘Company announces 3 days a week RTO plus 1 week per quarter full remote’ isn’t exactly newsworthy

People are hearing about it slowly but it has been quiet. I would also say that Schwab being a banking institution and inherently old-mindset oriented wouldn’t shock many people. To be honest, if they didn’t talk me into the flexibility aspect, I wouldn’t have joined because I have no interest in working in that kind of company.

With that said, we know this RTO mandate is a lot more than just a return to office. They have so few offices that are sparsely located, including their HQ in the middle of nowhere, that it is clear to me that the c-suite isn’t serious about having everyone in an office. This is about head-count - period. I won’t believe it otherwise until they relax these ridiculous mandates to allow for most of us some time (8-12 months) to let our leases expire and allow for relocation planning as a worst case scenario.

Or how about this - why restrict your candidates to a zip code when you can hire the best candidate anywhere? What a thought!

There weren't formal layoffs announced just the usual RTO verbage that many other companies are doing.
