I'm coming up on the 5th year sabbatical eligibility very soon. With the coming layoffs, I'm wondering if/how I should proceed. I am in a role and location that is maybe above average chance to be impacted by cuts. Should I submit my request or wait? Advice or other factors I might not be considering?

In previous layoffs (2019) if you had an approved sabbatical then they paid that out. If eligible to submit for one then submit and get it approved asap.
If you have earned a sabbatical and SCHEDULED it you will get that paid time if you are let go. On the day of your notice you will begin your sabbatical. After the sabbatical time is completed your 60 day notice period will begin. If you are eligible for a sabbatical get it on the calendar ASAP! If you don't get let go or plans change you can reschedule the sabbatical for another time.
Some posts on this and other threads suggest that sabbatical is paid if approved, however JW: Sabbatical says otherwise. At this point I’d rather get 4 week pay than rush to anticipate the trip I planned for next year. Anyone had personal experience getting paid for sabbatical?
Same boat. I have already paid for half of my vacation and scheduled to be on sabbatical in January. Thinking of cancelling
Long time Schwabbie here that was laid off after 15 years of dedicated service. From experience I can tell you that as soon as it shows as available put in for it. If you put in for it, get approved, and then get laid off you still get to have it. If you wait and don’t put in for it before getting noticed, they don’t have to give it to you.
I’m almost on the same boat as the OP.debating what to do. I’m eligible but was not able to submit request due to a project. At this point, I’m thinking about taking mine as soon as I can get approval, even if I just sit around in the house. I’m thinking that If I wait I might end up out of a job with no sabbatical at all. It’s really sad as this was the one benefit that was really good and I was looking forward to a one-month trip.
If you have it in the system an approved they should pay you out if laid off if it’s owed but not in the books they will not
Absolutely use by October 1.
Check out Jump Word - Sabbatical. If you are part of the layoff and have not used your sabbatical before the date of termination, you will not receive any compensation like you would for accrued vacation time. I was planning to push my date to next year, but now have decided to use before year-end.
