Thread regarding Capital One layoffs

Accepting my job offer here < 4 months ago is one of the biggest regrets of my life

Has Capital One always been this toxic and cutthroat? Everyone I spoke to told me about what an incredible experience it has been for them, but I’ve joined recently and experienced the most hostility, backstabbing, and overarching toxic culture I have ever experienced in 15 years of my career. I also have been hearing that they’re about to layoff 15% of the workforce and I am 70% sure I will be included because leadership will save their buddies above everyone else. I highly regret not going to Associate Relations when I first had issues my first few days in this organization… What a disappointment of an experience so far.

OMG! This is so on point. Happened to me. Manager was being a bully. Her flunky decided she wanted to get in, and bully me, also.
Was put on a PIP. H/r stood by passively letting things unfold. He knew the stuff she was saying was embellished, but... they always take management's side.
Before I joined in 2018, I read all of the toxic reviews on this place. Cut throat, toxic, evil. I had to find out for myself.
I hope all of those suffering there better, and to toxic management, you will reap what you sow.

"Has Capital One always been this toxic and cutthroat?" - yes

There are some great people and great teams spread all throughout the company and if you work with them you will have a great experience mostly. That said all the bad things you've experienced are also prevalent.

That said, this is not really unique to Cap1 IMO. Pretty much the same at any other large corporation you could work for.

Thanks to the brown nosers. Both figuratively and literally.

Don’t trust anyone in this firm. I had a very bad experience where they kicked me out by citing false claims on my PIP plan. Manager, Skip, HR and AR all were involved in it.

This sounds about right. I finally quit after more than 2 decades for the reasons I see in this thread. The culture at this company encourages this sort behavior. It just continued to get worse over the years. It sounds like things continue to degrade. I am sorry for those who are losing jobs. This has been going on regularly for over 20 years.

WOW... sorry to hear about your experience, but that's been the same here on my end. If you don't have the fight in you, you will get chewed up and spat out without a thought. What goes around comes around and I always trust that those leaders/associates with those behaviors will always get what they deserve. I've been here for more than 10 yrs and have not been in a group that wasn't toxic. There is a common denominator with all the toxicity and corruption, but I won't get into that. What you've described is what I see here regularly but you've gotta be willing to call people out privately to their face to get the respect you deserve. When folks are put in such uncomfortable positions, they don't really want that smoke. Cap1 is not a place for the timid and folks that don't like conflict bc you're bound to be pushed to a place that you have to assert yourself. I've conversed with AR a few times and if they really are going back to leaders telling them what I said, I can't tell bc I'm still here and no one's put a target on my back (as if I'd let them)... Or maybe they just know better than to do that...

Yep I second what the other poster said. I have a friend who was being bullied by their manager. They went to AR, they told their manager everything that they said. A week later he was fired for "performance issues". From what I've heard this manager has had alot of AR complaints but keeps getting promoted. This place is so toxic. And its company wide, I have friends in many different departments and it's all the same.

Yes. Never go to associate relations or HR they will contact your manager and tell them what you told them. The only way is to lay lay low and look for another role. It's a nightmare for everyone.
