Thread regarding Verizon Wireless layoffs

Severance pay and unemployment collected at the same time?

Has anyone who has accepted the VZ severance package also successfully collected unemployment? I believe this situation can vary depending on the individual state laws.

I retired after 30 yrs. Was surprised to get a Certified mail from Vz - Expected it to be some way they were going to sc--w me one last time.
Lo and behold, it was to inform me of my rights to file Unemployment in PA. Not sure if the state would pay due to a retirement but hey, thanx for the info!

I got a fat severance package last summer and collected unemployment for about 10 weeks til I landed a new gig. In the immortal words of the late Logan Roy, F*CK off Verizon!

In NY, NC, FL, and TX they pro-rate your severance over a period of weeks as if you were still "employed" and you cannot qualify for unemployment payments during that time. Once the pro-rated period is up, you are eligible if still unemployed. CA seems to be the odd state that severance is not calculated or taken into account for eligibility.

And if you signed a release of claims.

Yes you can, if your state allows for it.
