Contractors always love getting the Saturday call, "Don't show up to work Monday".

GM must be doing pretty nasty on the inside. If you know how to stock chart and read TA, their stock price is ready for some nasty drops over the remainder of the year. These layoffs are always precursors to nasty moves in the stock price. I could see a very low 20's or sub 20's price on GM stock. There are gaps to fill still. DYODD.

Was told to the very last minute Friday, that there is work for me while they knew 2 weeks prior that I will be laid off. There were promising to me there is work but before i even got the work was constantly replaced by other people without notice. So I knew I would be one of them one month before it happened. Feel like burning down the GM car just bought.

When I was a resident engineer for a large supplier, a GM employee asked me what kind of car I drove. When they found out it wasn't a GM car, they had a hissy fit and asked me why I wasn't LOYAL? Didn't I feel BAD? The supplier (my employee) worked with all of the auto companies, not just GM. This one conversation really spoke to the kind of stupidity and entitlement that is pervasive throughout General Motors.
Beyond that, another misconception that really irritated me was that suppliers were "contract workers". This was never the case. We worked direct for the supplier! We could be working with any customer.
You can't 'win with integrity' if you never had it to begin with.
Moving forward, as we enter a deep downturn (that many don't seem to want to acknowledge), there are going to be serious lessons in humility for many of the people who have smugly walked around the office with coffee cups while contract workers and suppliers did most of the serious work.
I fully expect more layoffs, a full return to the office, lots of petty rules, more humiliating DEI struggle sessions and of course the firm expectation that people work 50 or more hours. People will fight it but their expanded work roles will demand it. Fall short and you will answer to it in the quarterly reviews.

Mary says I’m so much better than those evil men that used to run the company. Now I hire contract and can just flush employees down the toilet easier.

Remember, I’m way better than stupid men (especially those evil men engineers that continue to push internal combustion engines). Those swine.

Now John Kerry and I can fly around the country (going to green conferences) in my private jet.

Let those plebeian employees eat cake on the unemployment line.

Not contract “employees” at GM, policy was it should never be implied a contractor was an employee and contractors should be referred to as workers. This however was never followed, every team or all people meeting the presentation slides referred to employees of that group or organization. They claim to be the most inclusive company in the world yet immediately excluded non-GM workers from the onset. Their training courses were the same, the recommended audience was employees and references to employees were made throughout but, contractors were required to complete the course. Emails clearly for GM employees only were always sent to non-GM workers and if they asked to be removed from the distribution were told to just kindly delete them. These smarter than everybody else employees didn’t have the sense or couldn’t be bothered to create separate distribution lists. There was always a bias towards contractors at GM, you could walk down the hallway and hear a GM employee say out loud that “rotten contractors were stealing jobs.” A GM employee disrupting a training class was asked to leave and while trying to still get credit asked “who does she think she (the instructor) is? She’s nothing but a contract worker, I’m a GM employee.” When a previous layoff was being discussed in a staff meeting a supervisor decided it was a good idea to discuss why the director preferred to hire contractors. It was because they were easier to fire. So basically she hires em so she can fire em. Oh, by the way, this callous remark was made with a contract worker in the room. A manager was financing a former contract worker’s company with GM $$, back in the day when there was a certain $$ amount that didn’t require higher approval. The GM employee who knew about it but, was too afraid to report the manager, told at least two supervisors. None of the three reported the manager. In-fact when the employee told the first manager he said “well if you tell, you’ll still have to work for her.” In other words, we both know this is wrong but, you will likely be retaliated against. This in a company that has a non-retaliation policy and every year all “employees” must complete a corporate required training course titled Winning with Integrity. A contractor, who actually had integrity, anonymously reported the manager who was eventually terminated. You ask why would a contract worker stay at GM? Like any job there are pros and cons, and you have to do what’s best for you while working and hoping for change. They expect contractors to act like an employee when it’s convenient for them. In the end though, no matter your work ethic, dedication, and integrity “they hire you so they can fire you.”

It's also easier for fired contractors to go the press and tell them all about how well GM's EV programs are doing. They have nothing to lose.

It's easier to let people go when they're at home.

You just mail them an empty box to send back their laptop.

No muss no fuss.

Yet this is the same company who’s CEO said in Jan 2023 that sales were record breaking and no layoffs will happen.

I grantee the media doesn’t know and GM wants to keep this quite.

I bet MB is ready to ask for a loan come dec

“ But didn't GM just beat earnings estimates?”

Yes, but earnings are reports on prior performance. These actions are to help prepare for or obtain future results. Not saying I agree with what’s done but just saying the way it works, fair or not. Hopefully this nonsense settles soon. Hard for employees to be fully engaged when in constant worry about their jobs.

Hmmm, seems like GM has failed yet another societal norm (in America - perhaps not in China). An opportunity for another company to succeed this bad example of a manufacturer that doesn't realize that it depends on its people to do anything. Maybe the board and a few of the upper layers need to go back to school or better yet, experience a similar event. In the climate we're in, this is tantamount to hanging a big blinking sign that announces we think our future is elsewhere. So be it.
