Is it really a huge process for a manager to promote a direct report to the next level of current role? Mgr says there a "list" and it could take years? WTF? didn't Workday streamline the process? anyone know? please don't reply with snarky remarks

Lol. Promotions???? Seriously had my laugh for the day give me a break. Ask for a promo and they tell you be happy you have a job.
It's WF. The only way up is out
No, it's not a huge process. At least in my group.
We identified a person for promotion. Documented performance and quantified why the promotion was appropriate.
We ensured the person was rated "exceeds" at mid-year and end of the year and added to the system.
No issues and no problems.
Not trying to be snarky, but it’s been stated on here many times that much of this sort of thing is LoB/job specific so without providing that info you’re just going to get a bunch of different answers, many of which won’t be relevant to you at all.
That is a ridiculous amount of review to deem someone worthy of a promotion. Jfc
They o Lu post a job because they have to. They already have someone lined up. These job postings are a huge joke.
This place is only a trough for people to bring their friends over & collect a check. They don't want people to work hard. Case in point. Prolly one of your manager's buddies is getting that sweet gig that you were hoping to get promoted to.
If you read this board you may see a pattern of having to be in the "WF Club" or "Club WF". If you are not in the club, you don't get anything around here.
Wells doesn't promote. You need to apply for a higher level role. And in those cases, hiring managers already know who they are picking.
It's not as simple as your manager promoting you. They need to put you in for it and it needs to go up the chain for approval.
Is there such a thing as promotions at this company? Didn't know they existed except for the chosen few.
I got promoted this year as an individual contributor. Went from a Senior level to Lead level. According to my manager here is how it goes for our LOB:
- Mgr submits promotion request
- Reviewed/approved by 2up manager
- 3up managers reviews with 2up mgr and peers, to make sure everyone submitted will be smooth in the next round. What feedback do peers have, has person contributed to other groups within dept, etc
- Goes to LOB committee. This committee includes our LOB head, directs, and then a few others in leader positions not necessarily direct report. The committee gets the full list of people up for promotion. Then people within the committee weigh in on their interactions with said person. If there are objectors to a particular individual they talk through it and see if still eligible.
- After approval then it goes through the normal workday paperwork
Each LOB is different, but this is how ours operates. If you aren’t getting promoted and your manager is truthfully submitting the paperwork, you may be held up by poor interactions with peers of your 2,3 or 4 up levels. Our LOB had ~120 promotions this past go around.
They will tell you be lucky you have a job with the current state of affairs with Welks Fargo. If you want a promotion you have to go to a better company that will appreciate you.
Why promote you and pay you more when you are doing the same job cheaper?
As Liam Nelson said in the movie Taken. good Luck.
In the "old" Wells Fargo (Norwest) I was denied promotions 3 years in a row because I didn't make enough.
Every single job change I've had required me to apply. Anyone who says differently had help from high enough to avoid it.
If you want promotions go outside the company. This is not the place to make a career!
Promotions don’t come easy, especially now a days. They rather you do the higher work at your current rate. Employees are no longer seen as a competitive advantage so why bother keeping us happy. For most of my career here at Wells, i have had to self promote by applying for a new position. I moved up a level on average every two years until i hit the top of my position.
I don’t know the answer, but this is why people move around a lot and aren’t loyal any more.
It’s easier to go elsewhere then come back in a higher role.
I promote from within all the time. It's not a problem. The only time it is is when the re--rded "20% rule" gets in the way. Then you have to fight for it. It's the 2nd d-mbest rule in the company. With no approvals at all I can pay an external $35/hr, but I need the OC to approve paying a dedicated highly qualified internal $25. Makes sense, if you like discrimination against your own employees.
Forget it. With all the layoffs no one is looking to promote anyone
What this manager is most likely doing for the promotion process is a smokescreen. Behind the scenes they are talking to one of their buddies or their favourites / yes man about role and offering it to them while doing fake interviews and follow ups with the real qualified candidates to check all the boxes for the promotion and hiring process.
it doesn't go to OC unless comp jumps 20%
It's not a Workday thing, it's a management thing. Promotions need to be approved by OC people, so depends on how comfortable your manager is willing to push up to the top. Then those conversations could take some time.
