Can you provide some context? Is it from your manager? A VP? Your HR partner? Is it just you and one other person? Your manager, VP + HR?
Any info you can provide on what to expect would be helpful! It sounds like in some cases direct managers aren't even aware. Its up at VP level?

You get a meeting request late in the day, often after 5, for the next day. Then your manager or one over manager and an HR person tell you that you are terminated and that your computer will be turned off at 5 that day.

The VP meeting to a group will be the leader telling you your manager is gone. If you are being RIFFed, it’s an individual communication.
In these things, 1-on-1 meeting with HR or a manager usually means you are terminated. Group meetings with entire department usually means you are not terminated but explains who has been let go. Group meeting with unrelated individuals you don't work with would be a group termination meeting, which some HR departments do during large layoffs.
I wonder what the group one is for? Usually if laying people off they do it in individual rooms with manager and HR. Any idea?
