Are there more rumors of a more days being enforced with regard to return to office for next year? With gas being so expensive everywhere, how does that make sense.

Yes. Look for RTO to tighten up in the coming months.
You seem to forget that the ones making these decisions do not care about the cost of gas, or really anything else that effects us peons. They would prefer that we voluntarily resigned as soon as possible.
