Thread regarding PepsiCo Inc. (Pepsi) layoffs

Momentum during layoff time

Momentum is everything.

Watch the people who moved fast. VP to CEO. VP to President in under five years. Then watch what happened to the people who were "doing great work" and stayed at level.

If you're being told how good you are but you can't get out of L09–L11, LG1–LG3, or LG5 — you're keeping a seat warm. Praise is what they give you instead of a promotion, not on the way to one.

And levels move both directions. Look at how many presidents from five years ago aren't presidents now. Special assignment. Retitled to SVP. Moved to the franchise team. Out. Some of them got jumped by people they used to sit above.

Nobody is going to tell you which side of that you're on. The climbers compound. So does standing still.

History repeats. Pay attention.

@kw you’re absolutely correct and I mentioned mentioned it on my exit interview but it will fall on deaf ears. Race, Gender and youth are the determining factors for getting promoted . Years of CPG experience and success, customer management success, high PDR scores and mastering your current role for 2-3 years as it used to be, means nothing at PepsiCo Thus all their failures and why KO is kicking their as--s.

The knowledge shared in this post can take you from the L11 world to LG6 + if you’re a sociopath

@kf that is exactly what is happening. Happy you found a better position.
In our dept., age (campus hire notably), nepotism status (the worse qualification!), race and gender determine whether you are promoted or not. Business experience and education has no value in many L6-L10 roles. PDRs and ratings are whatever they want them to be. It has hurt this company a lot to have unqualified people in these roles who can’t answer questions that someone in their role should know. Give them five years or so…

Speaking as someone who just left PepsiCo for the fact that I couldn’t get out of my L11 role for 6 years, another great company found me, gave me an offer and without hesitation I left. It is much better someplace else than this sinking ship when you’re constantly being passed by incompetent people moving to higher levels who have no clue what they are doing and were in their prior roles for a year or less.

@ae absolutely the case. Roadblocks and if you are not Indian..no promotion or lateral moves. They have reserved them for India people.

That is pure discrimination

Total politics. Lots of leaders have no clue about how anything works in the company. Gullible too. People around them say everything is perfect.

ALL POLITICS!!!
Many honest, intelligent, pleasant and stellar employees are not promoted. Sad because we need them on top.

Careers run on momentum, not merit. The only reliable way to lose is to become someone else's liability. Be pleasant in the room. Be surgical outside it.

Not hunting for a bigger stage? That's a choice, and it's the wrong one. Without a named path to SVP, you're just one of many. Your leverage rises and falls on who's in the room. Not results. Politics.
