Everyone keeps telling me LinkedIn is the way to go but I have gotten absolutely nowhere with it. The idea of messaging random strangers just to network makes me want to give up entirely. Has anyone actually landed something decent from that site?

Early in my career uncertainty lead me to question how long it would all last. So instead of spending every penny that comes in, I saved it and maybe went without a few things. Over the years the savings have grown and grown. I no longer need this job. I get more out of a passive income than I do out of DXC. I'd quit, but there is no work! haha. So I dial into calls, say very little and wonder when exactly the company will accept my offer of letting me go on what's a very modest VR. It'll pay for my next holiday, and we can stop this farce of pretending we're all busy.
I got a job through LinkedIn, that let me leave DXC. More money, more senior role. All in all, very happy. First job through LinkedIn though, routinely it has been via direct applying or through recruitment agencies.

No, no, and no. LinkedIn is great for extracting money out of you all while using your own data to manipulate you into buying expensive upgrades. Please don't continue down this path as is leads nowhere.
I'm 59 and have ONLY gotten jobs by referral. That is not to say I haven't tried the old, "find a posting, submit an application, hear nothing in return" 99.99999999% of of the time. THAT's debilitating.
I hear your pain, but the best think I did about 20 years ago, is to methodically build my network. I made it part of my own personal operating system. If you can summon the strength to push past your discomfort, it will eventually succeed.
Spend some time with these two influencers. They will help you learn how to build that network without feeling like you are constantly holding out a tin cup for spare change.
No, successful people are not using LinkedIn a lot.
Nobody likes IT. We never get a thank you. Only complaints when they can't work it out, pressed the wrong button, misread it, or have managed to break it. But it's our fault not theirs. They think they can solve it themselves quicker with AI and generally they can. So your best bet is to either build a service people actually buy or get out of IT entirely. Linked in just brings scams to your door, beware the fake job offers.
No, LinkedIn is nothing but narcissistic trash. Better off tacking your resume to a telephone pole.
