Thread regarding Target Corp. layoffs

Return to office

I know everyone works differently and has their own preference for how they’re most productive—whether that’s remote, in-office, or a hybrid of the two.

I’m one of those people who genuinely thrives working remotely, and I’ve proven that I can do my job well that way. Requiring everyone to come into the office four days a week for more “collaboration” moments feels unnecessary to me. My role realistically requires one or two days in person, and I’m happy to come in for those.

And when we have a New York office and team members who are still working remotely, what’s really the difference between being at home or sitting in an office for a Zoom call?

Target has done an excellent job silencing its employees, and almost everyone I’ve talked to is miserable. People are being asked to come back to the office without additional compensation, while many haven’t seen meaningful raises in years. There’s a growing disconnect between what leadership thinks is happening internally and what employees are actually experiencing.

And unfortunately, I think the guest is starting to notice that disconnect, too.

Happy employees = better work = better products.

@jg doesn’t explain how many of the Brooklyn Park based pyramids like TES keep adding additional days too. All corporations are doing it, it’s executives needing to feel in control and not trusting their employees. Eventually we’ll all be back in office 5 days away like it was before COVID. It’s what these narcissistic leaders want.

@z3 big yikes about Elon Musk.

I was really disappointed when MF was announced as the new CEO. I really think we needed (still need) someone from outside the company. Also maybe a woman. Just an idea.

eww he is a fan of musk, that makes sense. the company culture is unrecoverable and everyone is miserable and overworked. the toxic level is at an all time high

Didn’t know fiddelke was a musk fan, but not surprised. All of this is to control people and give the illusion that leaders are doing something to improve to business with collaboration, just trying to save their butts

They are using the whole, “more moments for collaboration” excuse relentlessly. I’m sorry but any “collaboration” goes out the window when something that can be a Slack message goes out the window when it almost always turns into 30 minutes of productivity evaporating into thin air because I just have to hear about what so-and-so is doing or what slop someone is watching etc.

Additionally but, b!tch excuse me? What collaboration? All of our workflows are on rails and someone has a meltdown as soon as something unexpected happens.

Truth is Fiddelke idolizes Musk and wants to style Target after some of his habits; hoping the value goes back to 200+. However because he’s a normie, he completely misses the point that Musk’s companies are worth what they are due to an army of chuds pumping the stocks and holding bags. Additionally, Target’s previous valuation was a Black Swan event for Target and other grocer retailers due to C-19.

Target try not to be a sh!tty mid-tier company challenge: impossible

@te Agreed. Post pandemic prices are absurd. Houses are 2x+ more expensive. Cars are expensive. Gas is expensive. And leadership is so stingy. They refuse to allow raises or promotions. Expect double or quadruple the work. People are expected to do 2 3 or 4 people's jobs now. Is such bs.

I just don’t understand how any of this is fair. We aren’t getting four days of additional compensation for four days of additional work-related presence. Sure, our salaries are not technically being reduced but our total economic value of the job is being reduced because we’re now personally absorbing additional expenses that we weren’t absorbing before. And for what??? Collaboration? Give me a fu--ing break. There are so many other teams that still don’t have to go into the office or there are teams still at 1 or 2 days only a week. Those people don’t have to take the “pay cut” that we have to, and that’s what pi---s me off. I hate going into the office but it would definitely feel more palatable if parking was paid for and/or we were getting a raise alongside this stupid a-s mandate. Ridiculous.

One of the main reasons I have stopped doing surveys. Management isn’t listening to what we say. I am no longer going to shout into the void.

This BS is caused by pressure from the Minneapolis government. The Mayor has call remote workers lazy. They've blamed targets leadership for not bringing their workers back to downtown. They want employees to go back to buying coffee and lunch all day to finance their city.

If you really want to get a point across. Don't spend a dime when you can in the surrounding businesses when you are forced into the office under the "collaboration" lie. Bring lunch.

I know only a handful of people excited to go back into the office with everyone. Everyone else is as disappointed and annoyed with it.

Careful, you’ll wake the trolls.

But seriously it is ridiculous to make us come in on the premise of collaboration when half the people I work with are on the other side of the globe. If in person work is so crucial to collaboration, why do we have so many team members scattered around the world?

The other frustration is that many of us WANT to do our job well and productively. The type of work I do doesn’t require collaboration, it requires focus. I do that much better and more efficiently at home. I want to be good at my job and the best way to do that is remotely.

I always thought it silly (and unproductive) to sit in a large space with others sitting next to me, behind me, across from me; and everyone is on the same call or a totally different call - everyone with headphones, and talking over each other. Then if you aren't on a call yourself, you have to wear headphones to block everyone else out with music or go to another private room to concentrate. Ridiculous.

@cj I love working on the flex floors to get away from everyone! Do you know which floor will still be the flex?

I couldn’t have said it myself. Has anyone else heard about the Flex Floors? They are converting 2 out of 3 of them back into permanent team floors. Which is great for teams that need space. However, we do not have nearly enough bookable conference rooms to facilitate said collaboration as it is. So… there’s that too.

This is so true! Target needs a wake up call. You’re clearly not listening to what people are putting in the surveys. Even leaders aren’t excited about returning to work and they are being beat down with the amount of work they are doing.
