Maybe developers used to be valuable, but that's sure not the case anymore.
35 years ago that was the case, but not now. the poster is spot on. Worker bees are exactly that. Drones who build the hive, die off and are replaced with another drone. I saw this trend start in the early 90's when I bumped into and started to chat with some Microsoft developers. They told me they felt they were aging in dog years. It hasn't gotten better.
I tell young people to avoid tech It's no longer the stable, employee friendly, high paying career it used to be. Sure you'll eventually get paid well, but at what cost? If you want to be a developer apply it to other industries or do something else entirely that will pay better. Being an electrician has better long term prospects. That's not a dig on electricians. We'll be needing electrical professionals more than ever and you won't get saddled with 6 figure debt before you even have your first job.
I'm retired now and I just see an industry that is nothing like the one in which I started. I'm glad I was in it when I was, it was fun and exciting, challenging and rewarding. I see little of that now.
