Thread regarding Follett layoffs

Nebraska Book Company

NBC announced today that they are ceasing all operations as of Wednesday. 114 employees are losing their jobs immediately with no severance.

As they are Follett's largest used book supplier, it is definitely going to have an effect on them.

No big deal losing NBS, student don't buy books from us anyway. Wish I could sell Access but I feel like an id--t answering each question with "not sure, will get back to you".
They want details, prices, etc, none if which managers know.

Digital is just more efficient. The used textbook market is just bloat. Now that efficiency can and will inevitably reduce the need for us. But CEOs dont care about that as much as they care about the profitability. The culture is money, the rest the try to sell you is a lie.

Now physical books are the better product in my opinion. You generally get better memory retention, there is no "I cant access it", and it retains some value or did...? I prefer them myself.

Perfect opportunity for Follett to reopen the ADC and get them robots booted up and dusted off!

Unfortunately Amazon owns the bots.

Stores on inclusive access see sales increases with reduced overhead.

That is why labor budgets are cut to the breaking point.

For the store level associate your dedicated service has been appreciated.

Please lock the door on the way out!

I know a lot of young professors who prefer print too. No need to make this an ageism issue.

Used $200 textbooks for $150 is a dying business.
Course materials is alive and well under digital. Stores on inclusive access see sales increases with reduced overhead.
It's waiting for older instructors stuck in their ways to retire so entire colleges go digital.
