Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Just got notice. How or who determines if you get the AX?

Just got RIFed.

Any insight into how they decide? Is it your direct manager decision whom to let go or do they tell them whom to let go?

I’ve been working quite hard and doing well so it’s a bit or surprise.

Have been here just under ten years.

Blessing in disguise I guess. Salaries much higher outside

It depends on who is RIFed, how deep a cut, and which "wave" is it. Usually M3 (snr mgr), dont know much. M4/M5 dir/snr dir ditto. M6(also strangely senior or i remember wrongly) probably have some advance notice. Probably no input as well. LJE is M10? so M3 is really 2nd rung in the mgmt ladder :)

Go search the orgchart(oops too late), there is a role aka "ops analysts". they do the spreadsheet to the SVP (Oracle aka management by spreadsheets). how well/little u do/did, has absolutely no bearing on whether u get RIF or not. u r just a number, and shld treat Oracle the same. 8 hours, nothing more, nothing less. 8 hours done, GTFO.

Oracle is a app biz company, its not a tech company. dont apply logic to its decision, just apply $$$ to the decision, years later, that will make more sense (i.e. the whole product line canned).

Senior Directors and VPs do a rank and yank using a set of criteria with input sought from line managers. Examples: your performance appraisal rating, if you have had any performance concerns that are more easily dealt with via a RIF than through long-term performance management, your relative cost, potential business disruption, how easy it is to replace you, adjustments to avoid discrimination claims, adjustments to claim credit for boosting diversity and equity, your tenure, your growth potential, any special projects you’ve completed, any positive or negative customer feedback, plus lots of subjective bias (halo effect, recency bias, etc).

I hadn't heard of any in my dept (cloud tech), either in engineering or marketing. What dept was this recent round and how big was it?

M3 also, we have zero input in rifs and in terms of performance, that, most the time, comes from up top as well unless it's a personality issue. No manager likes firing someone they enjoy working with.

You’ll see when you look back that getting out of O was the best thing that ever happened to your career.

M3 is just someone that can't individually contribute.

I was an M3 manager for many years and had to do several rounds of layoffs. Not once did I have any input as to who was let go. It was all decided for me but I had to do the dirty work of telling people. Thank god I'm not there any more.

Managers and Directors make the decision, usually based off who is critical, basically if you are the only one that knows or owns a specific system you're pretty safe. That makes architects usually the safest

I thought I would be here for 25 years service award. Most likely will be laid off before that.

this particular layoff round seemed to affect those with many years at oracle, i had just under ten, some had as much as 20+

I was definitely not making a high salary which makes this layoff somewhat easier - every recruiter mentions my salary will easily be 40K-70K more. I actually thought me being paid less was my saving grace during the last layoffs, I figure I would be the cheaper employee- oh well, I learned my lesson!

@mgw+1lYwTteV, Oracle got rid of their best people a long time ago. I guess the cycle is still happening, just letting even lesser knowledgeable people go. At least customers still have access to the 'original best' that are now verified Oracle Partners to do the work

They don’t want knowledgeable people around them. Intelligent people are dangerous to the management. Most likely the credit for everything you did was given to someone else to make it look like you did nothing. Then they can point to you as a nobody and get rid of you. They figure they can always steal in the same way from the next guy. Also, management has no understanding of the knowledge you possess. They think you are easily replaceable and they’ll find someone cheaper. They don’t know what they are doing. Like shooting themselves in the foot.

Its all about your relationship with your manager. You get saved or axed based on that from what I know. VPs asked Managers who should go.
Always do what you’re asked - some people push back, bad mistake they don’t have time to argue with you…

I think usually the director and managers go thru each individual and make a decision.

There is no rhyme or reason to what they do. You will be better off somewhere else.
