Thread regarding Oracle Corp. layoffs

Oracle Managers, current or past, how did you monitor remote employees?

How does Oracle enable monitoring of employees?

Do they track keystrokes? online time? mouse movement?

do they turn on microphone or webcam? (these two seem like a serious invasion of privacy!)

Most of your suggestions are illegal in many countries.

Short Term if you need to micro-manage someone: Confluence and JIRA activity, Slack. Keep a journal to build a paper trail. Peer feedback / complaints about those not carrying their weight.

Long Term: Trends in the data to measure contribution and KPIs. Peer comparisons and benchmarking. Performance appraisals. Presence and active participation in meetings. Customer feedback and special mentions.

Are you worried at what they do or how to manage your team? First, they do nothing besides blacklist some sites, but no monitoring. If you’re looking for advice, trust your team and watch how they perform, getting work done is more important. They need to be available at the times that you agree on and you agree on what communication method is best. Once you get this sorted you’ll be much happier and so will they. Happy people are productive.

I was a manager in development and we switched to SCRUM with two week sprints, daily stand-up meetings, etc. It becomes very apparent who is productive and who isn't on a small team.

LOL...Uh, no. As bad as others might think, for the most part Oracle uses the "honor" system. If you're given projects and deadlines, and you miss them, that's a clue. If you're never on Slack or you don't respond to emails during working hours, that's a clue. If you seem to have too many adventures during the work week, that's a clue. As much as I like to hate on Oracle for the things they do wrong, Oracle actually treats their employees for the most part, as professionals. Now, having said that, if you have a manager that wants to get rid of you, be prepared for them to be up your's. That being said, if you get a ton of micromanagement, that also a big clue.

how did you monitor remote employees?

I thought this was common knowledge because it has always been so obvious. What do you think MyDesktop does? And not just for remote employee but rather for all employees.

  • every keystroke
  • every mouse click
  • every URL visited
  • every piece of software installed
  • every file uploaded or downloaded

In short, everything you do on Oracle's computer and on Oracle's network. And don't think your VPN client obfuscates anything. AI, network monitoring, and correlation of temporal data allows Oracle to reconstruct anything and everything you do.

Monitor by completion of deliverables on time and the quality of the work.

Just assume that it is happening. Like most security initiatives they aren’t going to talk about it.

Do not monitor, just have confidence in your team , if you don't trust them let them go to another team / company
