Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Just stop with the RTO whining

It’s not going away because you complain about it on an anonymous layoff forum. It’s just not going away.

It makes zero sense for so many of us, has negative environmental impacts, causes us to have more personal expenses, exposes us to disease, forces us to work in awful cube farms with no privacy and exposes us to the variety of personalities that we sometimes don’t like, forces us to smell that nasty fish your coworker insists on heating up in the microwave…yes, for most of us, the office blows.

And yet…it is here to stay. I recommend finding a way to make it work for you and make the best of it. Here’s what I do: get there early so I can snag an office (this eliminates the majority of the things I despise about being in office), eat my lunch I brought from home, leave in the early afternoon to avoid rush hour traffic and take my late meetings at home so when it’s 5, I’m automatically home and can engage with my family. When I do this, it’s really not all that bad. I can put my head down and focus and have some decent free coffee to boot. It’s fine.

Do what you need to do for you, but for the sake of your own stress levels and sanity, just accept that RTO is here.

Whining about whining is still whining.

I don’t even have to get there early to snag an office most days. So sparse is the floor I’m on, most of the time. And the rare day that they’re all taken, inevitably some open up by noon, when a chunk of people head home for the day.

Some of us remember a time when CPG loved people working from home. It allowed them to close buildings and brag to their overlords how much $ they saved each year as a result. Their tone didn't change until CS and SP came along. Now they herd people into buildings as a long term strategy to eliminate domestic workers. Through building closures, disgruntled employees, disease, and any other vile means they can come up with, it's all a plan to get rid of YOU.

I was 100% WFH long before COVID. As far as a corporation doing what it does to make profit, I'm totally cool with that. Of course, the best way to maximize profit is to stop wasting hundreds of millions every year to house 50k+ people that you don't need to.

This is how we know with a good degree of certainty that RTO is really all about getting people to quit.

@rus You're just like management, a whole lot of talking but zero useful information.

RTO was always a thing, even before pandemic, it was just called something different. Workplace Strategy is a plan and it was always going to change the office experience (no persistent desks, etc). People were still going to get laid off though more eloquently (HR gives option of relocation or resigning w/ severance).

The pandemic is all noise, all noise! It created this remote work ripple effect and now suddenly everyone is a bit sensitive and becoming entitled to the idea they should be able to control their work experience 100%. Corporate America is not into coddling, it is about moving products and workers around like chess pieces to zero in on profitability. Mistakes are always made but it is time to really really grow up or find a new job, freelance remotely full time, etc.

Until then, you've effectively volunteered yourself for whatever the job throws at you. You don't have to be a glutton for punishment if you don't want to! Your better future awaits.

Going in preCovid was fine. Had desks, office supplies, places to go for lunch, hundreds of co workers per floor around, good public transportation.

Now I have a sterile neighborhood to go to, have to bring in my own office supplies because our group would have nowhere to keep them and who would be responsible etc etc. , two options for food, even with the clamor for RTO on the busiest day of the week there may be 50 people on our entire floor - a generous guess. If they restack the buildings and move more groups n one area and also assign desks I think many of us would feel better about being there but for now all appearances lead one to believe most people are still working from home and those going in are the fools.

Bring it. Not worried about it. Tools in NYC seem to be to more worried about avoiding paying for big severances.

@pjf Your work location is: Remote

I'm waiting for that year of paid time off. Keep complaining about it, your tears are like frosting on my slow-baking triple-chocolate cake.

If/when I come back here to tell you I've been laid off, you'll get a lower raise that year because the bank will still be paying me an extra year's salary to sit and home and do whatever the eff I feel like doing. It's a win-win for me.

People do realize that the ones who are "Resisting" will be replaced right?

FRTO and everyone that supports it. I will oppose it until it goes away, and I really don't care what anyone thinks about that. It's a stupid policy implemented by stupid elites in NYC and pushed down by bootlicking toadies. It will fail, not because of anything I do / think, but because it's inherently inefficient and greatly impacts the talent pool we can draw from.

So no, I'm not going to "accept it". It's the "8 is Great" of our era.
