Can you volunteer for lay off?

Could you volunteer to be laid off to save another persons job that needs it more?

"I have heared that during VERP, MDT didn't offer a good severance package. It was 8-10K $ and few $ in 401K. However, during RIF they could get 2 weeks + 2 weeks * number of years they have served (that is avg 15-20 years) ~ 42 Weeks ~ $$$$."

There is also another 60 days of warning with pay on top of the RIP package.

Medtronic has had the voluntary seperation option before, where the company could accept/refuse your offer to seperate to reduce layoffs. The problem was, high potential people wanted to go seek their fortunes somewhere else - when the company says no, it makes those employees resentful and less productive and the company knows they dont really want to be here. if they say yes, they are boosting their best talent out the door. I don't think there will be any more voluntary seperation offers coming up. note this is different than the VERP - with that, if you were elible, you can say yes and the company has no ability to block your departure.

From my observation.

A peer of mine at Medtronic wants to be RIF'ed. They have grandiose future plans. They went to their manager and asked for it. The response of the response of the manager was that they did not have the authority to personally authorize such a thing, but would provide input over who should stay or go and would keep it in mind.

Another way would be to just go get some sort of correction action on your record, egregious behavior, racist or s-xist statements, and bo-m, being RIF'ed would be virtually automatic.

If layoffs are to happen mid April as its reported, they must already have the names picked out. I know people who have raised their hand offering/asking to be on the list, sometimes your manager will accomodate, sometimes they cant (or dont want to, prefer to have you quit to avoid severance).

but why not let ppl volunteer and then you still choose. doesnt mean they pick you just cause you volunteered. I worked for a company that did that in the past. But I am sure there is some reason companies dont do that

You can not volunteer to be layed off.

They will be careful to lay off at the Correct Proportions of male/female/races and allowing volunteers prevents that.
