Thread regarding Medtronic Inc. layoffs

RTO

Once that happens how will it effect the company with people leaving or is that what they want?

lol of course they want ppl to quit ! they are doing everything in their power to do that without putting a sign on the wall "we want people to quit" more people leave on their own less severance plus the ones who stay will probably be more motivated

I worked at Medtronic for 3 years and I can say that the Medtronic VP I was working for enjoyed 3 vacations a year thanks to a WFH arrangement. The whole organization was dysfunctional and this was under the facilities arm. They are the biggest boondoggle at Medtronic!

Working from home is not the problem - the culture of work in general is the problem and this is endemic across all industries, not just at Medtronic.

I am an advocate for working from home and I believe it to be the future of work that will benefit both employers and employees. However, in the current state, the culture of work is so dependent on physical presence. There are so many psychological games that you can exercise when you're in person. Think about a leader who is physically bigger than you vs one that is smaller - are you more likely to be influenced by one or the other? Have you ever been in a room where a leader is mysteriously quiet in a physical meeting vs one on a conference call? What about the guy who you see running back and forth between meetings in the office - it gives management (maybe false) the impression that this guy is really engaged and productive! These are the reasons why most leaders want their employees back in the office.

And then there's the other side, where these leaders try to collaborate. I had an instance where I was proposing a design change and some leader from R&D (who I would suspect have better things to do) made unhelpful comments such as: "please remove", "I don't think we should include this information", etc. The whole time, you're just wishing the reviewer would be more efficiency with their comments so there's less back and forth. In other words, there's a population of folks that just don't understand how to collaborate online (and recognize it's different than collaborating in person) and just don't want to learn.

So I don't blame management necessarily for mandating a RTO if they are trying to squeeze efficiency across the board for all employees. I think the population that are effective at WFH can be moderately as effective in the office and those who are bad at WFH can be more effective in the office. I just wish there was more of an acknowledgment that this is NOT a problem with working from home and more of a problem with work culture.

Also the supply chain was screwed well before COVID. The people who are to blame are also never held accountable. There is a strong culture of don't make sales or distribution unhappy at this company, and it's leading to it's detriment.

I've seen the numbers across departments. Finance, supply, and callcenter all had better stats at home. It is pump sales who refused to work more then 3 orders a day and it's on management for not being them responsible. It was pump sales pointing fingers when they were the ones not doing their work while at home, and pump sales quit the day they were to be back.

The entire medical industry is embracing work from home with little to no issues. So the real issue was not and has never been work from home. The issue is the management not holding anyone accountable, and making every wrong decision possible.

So many people were fired while work from home for low to no productivity in all departments except pump sales.

Put the blame where it belongs and not those who did their job when we were work from home.

Stop being part the problem.

To the person with the Bigot comment. You must be one the Remote workers and you have no idea what you are talking about. Productivity is down at lowest level since 1974. Supply Chain is a mess and all this is not because of the Pandemic. It is because of our Gov't mandates, work from home etc. I live with it every day

The comment below is from someone who has no idea what they are talking about and a bigot.

Just because you and other agents in your department were lazy does not mean the rest of us were.

It was proven in a lot of departments that productivity was higher at home then in the office.

So shut your bigot mouth. People like you are part of the problem.

Stop blaming other people and reflecting your own laziness on everyone else.

RTO should have been done two years ago.

We should never have paid someone to slack and sit at home all day to walk their dogs, get groceries or do yoga during work hours

It was a slap on the face to those who show up to work and build/sell products

So glad that atleast they are doing one thing right

Ha. A severance only happens if they lay you off.

It feels that they want people to quit. Senior Management did not care when employees informed them off the mass walk is that would occur due to RTO. This show a lack of care for their employees and that they want people to quit.

Do not give in. Stay and make them pay you out with a severance.
