GM is going over your workday talent cards to evaluate who is cut, who stays and who will be moved around. If you weren't encouraged by your mgr to fill out your talent card by now...well...
The bigger point is that GM has a system in place to quickly evaluate you and act accordingly. Ask yourself how your level of education, your skill set, your age, and DEI initiatives might affect your standing.
On January 31, 2023, Mary told investors, “we’re not planning layoffs.” On March 2, 500 were let go. Exactly one week later (March 7) you were told to seriously consider leaving GM to take on a hobby or find another career. This is all moving very quickly, so obviously there's a timeline with goals and initiatives set by upper management.
In the meantime, the 20-30 year lifers are begging you to quit so they can receive another 10 years of bonuses. Lay on the tracks for them, okay? Between the sharks in the management and the dogs among your colleagues, GM is a warm and fuzzy place to hang your coat. Personally, I'm leaning in. I'm going to stay as long as I can. I'm also hoping the 20-30 year lifers are finally let go so the young people can grow and find opportunities in the company. I'm going to encourage you to stay if you can and try to make a difference.
