Thread regarding General Motors layoffs

Talent cards

GM is going over your workday talent cards to evaluate who is cut, who stays and who will be moved around. If you weren't encouraged by your mgr to fill out your talent card by now...well...

The bigger point is that GM has a system in place to quickly evaluate you and act accordingly. Ask yourself how your level of education, your skill set, your age, and DEI initiatives might affect your standing.

On January 31, 2023, Mary told investors, “we’re not planning layoffs.” On March 2, 500 were let go. Exactly one week later (March 7) you were told to seriously consider leaving GM to take on a hobby or find another career. This is all moving very quickly, so obviously there's a timeline with goals and initiatives set by upper management.

In the meantime, the 20-30 year lifers are begging you to quit so they can receive another 10 years of bonuses. Lay on the tracks for them, okay? Between the sharks in the management and the dogs among your colleagues, GM is a warm and fuzzy place to hang your coat. Personally, I'm leaning in. I'm going to stay as long as I can. I'm also hoping the 20-30 year lifers are finally let go so the young people can grow and find opportunities in the company. I'm going to encourage you to stay if you can and try to make a difference.

Talent cards, quarterly reviews, etc. What the management is really doing and what you are helping them do is eliminating older workers who are higher paid and replace them with lower earning ones.
GM is really smart. They get rid of just enough younger people so that there can’t be a class action suit based on age discrimination. No doubt they have hired actuarial’s to make sure that the process followed reduces the risk of such a lawsuit. They’ve been doing it for years.
It’s only amusing that you want to stay, and become one of the old-timers that you so desperately want to replace and see terminated!
Maybe one of them is in a position to get you before you get one of them!

A talent card is like a TPS Report in "Office Space". It sounds important and people believe it has value, but, all it does is get 8 different people coming over to your desk to tell you the same thing at different times of the day.

Is HR going to validate every line on tens of thousands of talent cards?

HR can do background checks...
Imagine the repercussions if they found out you lied about education or experience on your resume or talent card.

This weekend they'll know who signed up for VSP and have the talent cards.

Sounds like they'll have everything they need for the final ISP list by Monday morning.

Unfortunately with the top brass being so old, they will never let the younger generation step up. They want to squash everyone down by having you work in the office keeping their eyes on you like it's 1980. That's no place and no way to thrive.
