It’s a forced ranking system with predefined % in each category. Each supervisor also has to rank their team within those boxes before going to the main ranking session. Even if you have a high-performing team, the supervisors responsible for spreading their team up into different boxes. It’s a flawed system.

@gr Actually, all kind and popular people in my team those folks either left or were pushed out. Calling it a popularity contest is the wrong phrase for XOM. It’s an a-s‑kisser contest, plain and simple.

It is a popularity contest. It always has been. They just don’t lie as well about it.

Guys. It works exactly as intended. I’ve been reading this forum for years and the thing that amazes me is how credulous everyone is about ranking. They want a pseudo merit based system to clothe their less savory efforts (eg, promote yes men) in a costume of ‘job performance’. Stop thinking it’s about actual job performance. It’s about executive power and greed.

@OP Get it in writing and hire a lawyer.

Also check the laws of your state. If you live in a one-party consent state (Google it), you can record the conversation without asking them.

@OP Many of those so called "managers" contribute to this broken system more than you think by favoritism and unfairness

It’s very hard to get 1000+ managers to all tell the same lie, especially when the truth is so obvious.
