Thread regarding Optum layoffs

Toxic offshore managers and leaders

Anyone dealing with Indian offshore manager and .not including you in meetings and chats? My director is now offshore and she has all the meetings during India times which is after midnight for me. I am not even on the invites, no communication nothing. She's spreading toxicity by dividing the teams deliberately. Business team is pi---d nothing is getting done correctly. Quality is sh-t but I am not able to do anything as they are doing whatever they want without consulting anyone onshore. Business told me indirectly that they will cut the funding and go back to their old process. This means layoffs both onshore and offshore. I can't believe a director can be such plain stupid and toxic to a point where she'll ship the sink and drag everyone down. And oh btw, neither she nor any of the engineering she hired are technical yet make all the decisions on their own with no documentation.

@j6 Every F500 company is slumdog millionaire tapping H1B Indians to chain migrate to the US. SLT/ELT need these 30-32 onshore "leaders" to translate to everyone else beneath them in India. If you have an offshore leader, your role will relocate to India tech centers.

Goal is to pay less to an Indian national in country competent enough to manage about as well as the 25th percentile USA-native onshore. SD himself would be outsourced back to India but his job is to talk to other slumdog millionaire H1B recipients doing his translation job at US clients.

There’s a common phrase, beware if you get a manager based in India. They’re sh-t and ruthless and absolutely don’t give a damn about your white a-s. They’re just looking to get rid of you and hire their own.

Ask them to record the meeting so you can use copilot to summarize it in English and move on. Offshore, onshore do you really actually care about having a manager? I see little need for them at this point in my development. Non-technical management and team members are the best, they say words, you do what you know actually needs to be done. Its very simple, don't complicate it with being butt hurt.

@q7 AI in offshore hands just creats more slop 🫟 and mess 🫟. Like others have never the innate desire for quality, excellence is missing n no AI is going to fix that. Onshore leaders are just too stupid to even realize that.. Because us onshore employees are fixing their mess. The ship will start sinking this reaches a tipping point.

@j6 offshore is still bad even with AI. They cannot do any design, just bad code at 10x speed. They are truly unmotivated to do a good job and AI ain't fixing that.

@ax ask yourself this. Does our leadership think AI is better in the hands of expensive onshore to make them more productive OR do you think they believe offshore can make up the skill gap with AI and therefore they pay India wages for an engineer on par with onshore.

I believe they will always lean on the side of cheap labor + AI = Amazing and not the other way around. It’s illogical but that’s leadership for you.

I hate to say it but this needs to happen for people to get their head out of their a-s and stop offshoring. It’s unfair that you have to go through it but it needs to be seen.

Im in UHC tech, we have 4 seniors, and 16+ offshore juniors and midlevels who are some of the most unskilled and unmotivated people you will ever encounter in the workforce

I've been in this scenario for 5 out of the 6 years I've been here. Everyone was flabbergasted that I held ops down by myself during the day when we had 9 on during offshore still missing deadlines.

@dv they are going to layoff offshore once they find out one AI enabled onshore can more produce high quality output than 10 offshore combined. Offshore will never truly understand business nor how things work here. A lot of things simply require understanding of the demographics that use our products or services..like contact center, portals, apps, vendor systems etc. that's the difference between top notch vs mediocrity.

@dr hope you are not in IT/Tech as more and more managers are offshore. Typical team in UHC tech is: 2-3 Sr. engineering/architect types onshore. Onshore or Offshore lead with 15-20 junior developers in offshore. Theu only hire nesw FTEs offshore. Some teams have senior managers, architects, directors and even TPMs offshore. I have been here 10+ years and seen the org structure change dozens of times. This is the worst I have seen
due to 80-20 push from IT leadership

Unless I were at risk of starving or losing my house, I would never stay in a job reporting to an offshore manager.

Put it in an email and directly ask “why am I off the meetings”. Be assertive. They want you to stay quiet. Speak up.

One Ai will soon replace offshore engineering. Onshore with AI is 100 times better than 10 offshore engineers. That's exactly what your offshore manager is keeping the OP in the dark as she knows offshore equality su-ks and they can get all replaced by one good onshore resource

A few onshore FTEs can do what a team of 30 offshore engineers did before. That's the change that's likely coming

@a1 because it's getting worse by the day and management seems to be not bothered. It'll be too late and lot of financial and reputational damage done before they wake up. Onshore should have onshore managers. PERIOD. that's how MOST companies with GCCs operate. How is Optum management so stupid?!
