Thread regarding Shell Oil layoffs

Found a new job as soon as I stopped worrying about pay

I'm aware that not everybody has that luxury, but if you can afford to drop 10 to 20 percent, there are plenty of options. My new job is interesting and it provides me with a chance to diversify in my field. I've been gone for a few months and I'm satisfied. If you want to leave, you have options. Just widen your search a bit.

@OP So, stop worrying and your wishes become manifest? Magical thinking? Sounds like Hinduism. You were definitely in the right company, buddhy .

every time i read about people taking pay cuts when they leave shell i cringe so hard

there’s just no way you’re good enough at resumes and job searching if that is your outcome.

this of course assumes you have kept your skills current instead of coasting. i’ve never seen anyone leave and take a cut who wasn’t just coasting with their brain stuck as it was at LEAST five years ago

you get out of your career what you put into it. quite coasting. make bettering yourself part of your work life. we have training budget that nobody uses which is wasted at the end of every year in almost every team, including IT. if you’re billable you can even time write 20% to training.

@f9 IT people in Shell get paid way more then people in refineries. Years back I went to Pernis as field trip and spoke with a guy responsible for 30 staff. I could not believe that guy being a JG4. And I was Jg3 accountable for nobodies safety and no direct reports. Just creating slides about cr-p GID laptops.

Yes agreed. After Covid, the layoff turned into disgruntled IT people not understanding why their novelty has worn off. If you’re in IT, consider it a win you lasted as long as you did while having your ego fed by people in LT promising you’ll take over Shell.

@dm If are paid more than you are willing to accept and more than any other employer is willing to pay you, then by definition you are being overpaid. DUH!

Its called golden handcuffs or golden cage. They pay you to believe you have the best deal in the world and do not (want to) find out there is much more fun at other places (and real WLB/and reward for performance without playing politics).

You can actually get paid more in IT since Corona time outside Shell (but you have to be good at it and not just making slides). For O&G folks, I do not know as those golden years are long gone.

@c4

Maybe they were willing to put up with Shell for more $$$. That doesn't mean that they are overpaid.

Now, they are focusing on the benefit of not working with A$$holes and that makes their overall compensation higher.

If your energy industry prospects got you down, there’s hope outside the petroleum world. For example, I understand a Walmart Store Director’s base pay is around $130k and can range as high as $400k+plus. Probably much more stable, too. Just gotta take the plunge.

The job market in the USA and, specifically Texas and Houston is atrocious. Find a job easily? That’s a joke…Indeed Petroleum Engineer and get a first hand look at how tough the market is…
