@jm Agree. At least 30% of job postings are essentially fake they exist so companies can signal growth. A large percentage are internal or visa‑justification postings that are already filled. And the few legitimate openings that remain are usually taken through referrals or existing connections
@g8+1kv6c8cme - Exactly, and you saved me having to type. One thing to also add is that many companies just put jobs on their boards to make it look like they are hiring. From what I have read they do it to look good to investors so they look active. Best thing to do is apply to a bunch of jobs and see the response you get, and if you get an interview try it out. I have been hearing some folks are getting interviewed and then ghosted by the company. The job search has changed dramatically from just a few years ago.
@OP I’m seeing very few roles for direct hires, especially at a higher level, because nobody is doing any long term investing that requires building a large, well-rounded, highly-skilled labor force.
What I’m seeing in O&G is an acceleration of automation, offshoring, and the use of contractors/consultants. And no, this doesn’t save money, but it does lower structural costs because contractors and consultants are typically paid out of the operating budget at most companies, and executives are under much less pressure from shareholders to cut operating costs (ex. fueling the company jet is an operating cost).
The job market now is pretty grotesque. The wars, tariffs, and other nonsense definitely aren’t helping it.
Upstream Petro Techs in Houston is a very difficult market. +800 candidates per position and many positions are non existent.
I dont want to work for oand g ever again.I started my own business and I can run it the correct way. I have a true meritocracy not a mediocrity like exxon. I judge my employees by their work output and teamwork. I have fired a kissers and bul sheeters. I had one employee spying on others and sabotaging employees.
I fired this tu-d because he reminded me of exxon employees. I always tell my employees you dont have to ki ss my as but do the work.
